Updated Hatchet!

I got up early on a Saturday and read this while everyone was asleep....seemed like just the right setting. It added to the creepiness! I wish I knew what happened to all the people to disappear so suddenly and leave their cell phones behind. Creepy!

I wondered why she wrote it in verse and she answers that in the pages after the book. Well explained and I'm on-side with her decision. Because it's written in verse, it's a really quick read.

Very compelling, an absolute page-turner. Particularly enjoyed the novel-in-verse format. Highly recommended.

Middle grade novel in blank verse about a thirteen year old girl who sneaks off to have a slumber party at her grandparents' summer home with friends, telling her mother she's with her father and vice versa. Her friends can't make it. There's a national emergency and everyone in her town disappears. She's left on her own for four years. The author was rewriting Island of the Blue Dolphins for contemporary kids in a familiar setting (suburban Colorado). CW: kitten death, hand gun (two separate episodes). My niece who recommended Eagle Drums loved this book so much she read it four times before it was removed from the Reading Olympics list (I think for the gun). Enjoyed for that fantasy of disappearing parents.
Read for book bingo: read a middle grade novel
