I know it was the intention but it's beautifully reminiscent of Island of the Blue Dolphins which was one of my favorites growing up (and I still enjoyed upon re-visiting it as an adult). The writing is lyrical, Maddie is well developed and realistic, the story well-paced, and the narrator (I read it on audio) was perfectly matched. Survival stories aren't always my cup of tea but this one sucked me in. I finished it in a day! Highly recommended!
This was a super fast, intense read! Novels in verse are not always my thing, but in this case, it allowed the author to touch upon (but not dwell) on some of the harsher realities of being left alone (if you are super sensitive about animals, maybe skip this one? Some of the references made me cringe, but again...the verse format quickly moved me along). The format also helped keep the pace moving quickly.
I really, really wish that the reader had a little more world-building background either as build up to the main character being left alone or at the end as a reveal. It felt a bit rushed. Overall though, I think a lot of readers would really like this one!

I loved this book! It was nail-bitingly suspenseful and all I could think about for the few days I was reading it. I love the description of her feelings of isolation and her innate desire to survive. George was the best, though I feel like the author could have gone deeper with George and Maddie’s relationship…I mean he’s all she had for yeeeears! Taking off one star because I absolutely hated the ending.
Spoilers ahead.
Seriously. The “oh wait, we messed up” and that’s the explanation given after allllllll the suspense? Just no! And the happy ending with a pretty bow after all the trauma Maddie endured? And George gets one line of resolution? I just felt like her feelings could have been explored deeper at the end.

WOW! A student recommended this book and I couldn't put it down. The verse format was awesome. it made for a beautiful and quick read. I love how not all of the questions were answered. It left me thinking and wanting another book! I can't wait to book talk it to my students.

I enjoyed every fast-paced second of this one. The verse is engrossing and beautiful. Maddie is likeable and real. If you're a Hatchet fan, this is the updated, Supergirl version!
(I'll add, I was a little annoyed that we're left wondering exactly what the "imminent threat" really was, but it didn't take away from my five stars.)

holy moly.
I did that thing where I checked out a book, put it in the TBR pile, renewed it WAY TOO MANY times, and waited until the day before it was due to actually start reading it. And now I regret that decision.
Alone is exquisite, and I wish I had read it earlier so I could tell everyone how great it is.
