I had never read a book quite like this but it was wonderful. It was amazing how the verse style seemed to have less words than a normal sentence structure but it still conveyed so much information. It was a little scary to read this book now with the part related to the government, but I also enjoyed the reflection on what we would miss without others around us.

Twelve-year-old Maddie thought a secret sleepover with her two best friends would be the perfect adventure—until she wakes up to a nightmare. The entire town has been mysteriously evacuated, and she’s been left behind. Completely alone.
With no power, no phone signal, and no internet, Maddie must figure out how to survive on her own. Her only companions: a loyal Rottweiler named George and a stack of books. As days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, Maddie learns to rely on her own resourcefulness, inventing clever ways to navigate a world that’s been abandoned.
She faces wild animals, looters, and dangerous storms—but her greatest challenge is the overwhelming loneliness that shadows her every step. Can Maddie’s fierce determination and unbreakable spirit carry her through the most terrifying ordeal of her life?
I read this book in one sitting. It reminded me a lot of the movie I Think We're Alone Now...where the character wakes up and everyone is gone. Freeman does an amazing job of immersing the reader into Maddie's thought process. I really liked how the reader experiences Maddie's growth, as she both ages and fights to survive. There were times that I forgot that she was a middle schooler. I look forward to reading the companion novel Away!

The audio was great! I don’t know if I would’ve liked it as much if I had read a hard copy. The voice held so much emotion in the words that pulled me into the story. I wish this would’ve been a longer book but I understand it is a middle grade novel. I would’ve loved more detail in how she continued to survive for so many years and more about the reason and corruption in the evacuation.
This book was awful. I'm a librarian and I now know never to recommend it to my students. It was just one disaster after disaster after disaster. It was way too long. By the middle/end I was skimming. The ending was INCREDIBLY INCREDIBLY abrupt. Wish I could get my time back. I think I give it a generous 1.5 rounded up to 2.
