This classic has been on our bookshelf for YEARS. So long now that my husband has forgotten how and why he had it. It has been on my tbr simply because I figured I should read it. Short enough to read in a day, or a weekend but definitely not lighthearted. A tragic, cautionary tale.

When Buzz Aldren followed Neil Armstrong out of the capsule and onto the moon, he is quoted as saying, "Beautiful. Beautiful. Magnificent desolation." That perfectly sums up the way I feel upon finishing Death of a Salesman.

“I don't say he's a great man. Willie Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He's not the finest character that ever lived. But he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. He's not to be allowed to fall in his grave like an old dog. Attention, attention must finally be paid to such a person.”

Even though the book is the antithesis of uplifting, I still thoroughly enjoyed the read because of the shear mastery of Miller's writing. Miller does an amazing job, in such a short space, of creating a truly anti-American dream story.

“And now, I get here, and I don’t know what to do with myself. I’ve always made a point of not wasting my life, and every time I come back here I know that all I’ve done is to waste my life.”
A tragedy of sorts- living in the rat race of life- missing the purpose and freedoms of life due to work. And Mistakes. And wrong turns. Great play, but I still like Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” better for next year!
