Edge-of-the-seat, exciting, and full of adventure, Silver in the Blood is a stunningly written book by Jessica Day George. With diary entries and letters between every narrative chapter, the novel pulls the reader into the 1800s world of two society girls who discover their family's "shocking" secret. Each young woman must make a choice, to follow the path of the family lineage or to forge a new path that might fulfill the family prophecy in an unexpected way.
I can't think when I've been more disappointed in a book/author. MY DAUGHTERS WILL NOT BE READING THIS BOOK. I am baffled at the scene where the villain threatens to RAPE them. Not only was it unnecessary for the plot, but it is also completely inappropriate for middle/tween readers. Bloomsbury and Jessica Day George, what were you thinking?!
Additionally, I understand the problem with shape-shifting and clothes, but the fact that the characters end up naked when they return to human form could have been handled more discreetly. Instead the girls come across as brazen hussies.

3 stars due to the fact that it was so difficult to get into. Not until after 53% did it get really interesting.
This started out wonderfully. I was so invested in the mystery and I loved the historical setting. Then the second half of the book kind of switched genres and I didn't like the direction the author took. I knew the fantastical twist was coming, and I was excited, but I didn't like how the author went about it. Plus, the ending was kind of open ended, which isn't my cup of tea.
Before I can talk about how good the story itself was, I have to rave about Jessica Day George. Her mind is full of brilliant stories, but this is the first book that her writing is on par with story. Is it weird to say I'm proud of her? SitB is just so, soo good!
As to story, it is so refreshing to read a story and not know where it is headed, but have all the clues available. And I just adored the characters, especially Lou. Oh, how I'd love to float away! And weren't Lou and Dacia a bit like Sense and Sensibility's Dashwood sisters? God, I love Austen.
At the risk of giving away the plot, I'm ending this review and signing off with the hope of a sequel!

Just for the record, this is a non-cliched vampire story. Finally. And I think it's historical. Don't quote me on that.
But it was GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So... I don't DNF books too often. Like, hardly ever. But when I found myself making excuses to not pull my kindle out to read, I knew there was a problem.
This could very well be a "it's not you, it's me" type scenario. Everything seems to be there for a good book, the setting, the main characters, a slew of men, paranormal goodies. But it never clicked right for me. There too many coincidences and the girls were just plain boring and annoying. And there were a year's supply of exclamation points used.
Other people might gobble this book up. And u sure tried to look past the problems that kept popping up. But I shouldn't be avoiding my reading time. That just can't fly. So it had to go.

Spoiled society girls in 19th century New York City, Dacia and Lou, are sent to Romania to meet their extended family. When the heir of the royal Dracula family, Mihai, decides he must have Dacia as his wife as part of a dastardly plan to take over Europe; the girls must decide whose side they will be on. Traditionally her family has served the Dracul family for centuries with their special gifts. When the girls learn the family secret, they are shocked and horrified. Will they stand together against their own family to fight for what is right? The story starts a little slowly as it builds the characters and hints at the secrets in the family, but once all is revealed there is plenty of action during an epic confrontation between the Prince and the cousins. A fun piece of escapism. It took me about a day to read, so it’s obviously not too dense. The story was fun and the characters were good.
