Why why why? This is just bad. Every single cliché of the genre is packed in this book, the characters are redundant, it feels like I'm reading fanfiction, and bad fanfiction as that. Were are the editors????
I will admit, I had no idea what this book was about when I pushed play. All I saw was narrated by Emma Galvin and Zachary Webber — two of my favorite narrators — and I was immediately in.
The story was quick and so was the plot. There's not much to say. Girl (Sofia) gets kidnapped by vampires, girl made personal slave to King Vamp (Derek), they fall in love, and oh yeah, King Vamp crazy bro tries to eat her. Everything happened so fast. Two fast. What was it, two weeks? Definitely not long enough for me to
I like both Sofia & Derek from on a basic level. But there wasnt any meat to there characters. Nothing to really hold to. I am half convinced that it was Emma and Zach's portrayals that made me perk up and listen, rather than the actual content.
The world building was pretty interesting. Vampire harem on a magical island with kidnapped, human slaves. And Derek being the Vamps reluctant hero, resisting his baser nature to feed and be a predator. Sofia being not the typical damsel in distress. This makes for a good foundation but not much more than that.
Overall, I found this book just OK, but with just enought of a dash of intrigue as to what happens next. Seeing as I have Book #2, I'll probably give the next book a go to see where things go. It's significantly longer story, so I'm hoping the story overall is better developed.

The start of a super cool YA fantasy. I really fell in love with this world and our characters and can't wait to see what comes next!
Not bad, interesting story building.... But there was just something
I bought this book on my kindle because they kept advertising it as "better than Twilight" or "the next Twilight"... it's not. I am only about a third of the way through it, & may or may not finish it. The writing is not very good, the character development thus far has me not caring one iota about any of them. This is unlike my experience of the Twilight series, where I felt a real connection with the characters... I couldn't wait to get home every day & "go see how my vampires & werewolves were doing"... I keep hoping this book will get better, but so far it's not looking good. :-(
addendum: Nope, I give up. Life is too short to read crappy books.

3 1/2 stars
I really wish there was bit bit more depth and description at times. The story moves fast and sucked me in right from the beginning. Derek's manner of speaking drives me nuts in the first half. He has been asleep for 4oo years but speaks modern day English?! While cells, dvds, etc baffle him at first the verbiage is something he speaks naturally right from minute one. Corrine I liked but her whole role of counselor and diagnosing disorders that are badly explained seemed out of place. I really liked all the characters and their personalities.
While there are story errors, the writing in clean, easy to follow and moves nicely. A very fast read.

This book was recommended to me by my friend Melissa and as she was pressing me to read it, I did. It was awesome.
A Shade of Vampire is about Sofia, who is kidnapped during a midnight stroll at the beach. When she wakes up, she finds herself at the Shade, an island where the sun never shines, and vampires rule.
Sofia is selected to join the Harem of Derek Novak, a vampire prince, and thus becomes his personal slave. She realizes that despite wanting to go home, it would be wisest for her to stay close to Derek, as it is by far the safest place on the island. But even there Sofia is not safe, for there are far more dangerous people on the island than the unpredictable Derek Novak...
I liked this book, a lot. My favourite character was definetly Derek, because, well, who doesn't like the badboy with a weak spot? I liked the way in which the characters were decribed, they seemed real and all had their little and/or big flaws. I also really liked how. I didn't like Ben, he was a jerk.
The story wasn't extremely predictable, fortunately, although I did predict some things before they happened. For example, I kinda predicted that, but that didn't make the story less gripping. Actually, I kept turning the pages, untill I finally reached the end and couldn't continue.
My favourite parts of the book, were the chapters told from Dereks point of view. I liked exploring his thoughts and feelings. Also, I really liked his thoughts about Lucas,.
This book made me laugh at certain times, and feel incredibly sad the other. Sometimes it got me extremely frustrated, in a good way.
I didn't really like Sofia, although I didn't dislike her either. One moment I wanted to throw a rock at her, but the next, I didn't. It was kind of frustrating. The thing is, I really disliked the decisions that she made, and occasionally I caught myself thinking that she must be the most stupid girl ever. But then I realized that a huge amount of those thoughts were based on the fact that I was aggressively shipping Derek and Sofia. When Sofia I thought she was an idiot, but now I realize that I would have done the same, were I to find myself in her situation.
I really hope we'll learn more about Vivienne and Corrine in the next book, they seem like two interesting characters, about who we don't know a lot, yet...
To end this review, I want to say that the amount of feelings I had about this book suprised me. I wasn't so sure about whether I would like it, or not, because of some negative reviews, but now I realize I was totally wrong for assuming such a thing. A Shade of Vampire is a great read for YA readers and people who like vampires, but want to see them in a different setting than the typical small town in the middle of nowhere. I only wished it was a bit longer, but that might just be my obsessive reader speaking.

I was given this book by Bella Forrest in exchange of a honest review.
So, here we are. This book was sooooooo YA that I think I lost a year or two in the reading. I did't like the "love at first sight" thing, I hate with a passion Lucas (because I hate rape and all thing related) and generally all the storyline seems... I don't know, rushed.
So I'm not really sure I'll be reading the second book, but I strongly suppose not.

I got this book free from the Author. I really enjoyed A Shade of Vampire. I have read a lot of vampire books and this seemed better than most in the genre and was a fresh take. I quickly read the second book and enjoyed that is well and I am looking forward to reading the rest.
