I got this book free from the Author. I really enjoyed A Shade of Vampire. I have read a lot of vampire books and this seemed better than most in the genre and was a fresh take. I quickly read the second book and enjoyed that is well and I am looking forward to reading the rest.
Too much sexual assault to be enjoyable, and totally plaigiarised twilight. I don't mind vampire stories, but they need to be original
None of this book was meant to be funny, but it made me laugh anyway.
Good element is the main characters being kind and sweet to each other, EVEN THOUGH the kidnapping-turned-to-love trope is cringe inducing. And the writing style is actually good. Subtle and somewhat tasteful actually.
It's the events and character names that make me laugh.
I don't know why the name "Derek" makes me laugh. It's supposed to be a hunky name, I know, but it really doesn't sound much like the name of a vampire who was born 400 years ago.
"Hands off the girl! She belongs to Derek!"
The witch smiled. "Have a good day, Derek."
"I need to talk to Derek."
"Don't be this way, Derek!"
The beginning is also a little odd. It's possibly supposed to show how the main character Sofia has a troubling past, and she also has a best "friend" named Ben, who is a football player. During the middle of a game, while he has the ball, (!!???) he notices her having a panic attack on the bleachers, and climbs up to comfort her, with a message to "Stop acting like a victim," ???
So... victim shaming? At a couple different points during the plot, Sofia determines to "stop" exhibiting victim behavior, so she attempts to attach a kitchen knife to her underwear, and she asks Derek to give her self-defense lessons. Thanks, Derek!
In terms of setting, the vampire island seems like a lovely place! It's full of TREE HOUSES! I imagine it to be like that treehouse world in that old computer game Myst. Or like everything that guy builds on that Treehouse t.v. show.
However, Derek's brother is pretty awful. It's very uncool how vampire romances always have rapey elements.
Luckily the island also has a resident witch who just so happens to have majored in psychotherapy. She and Sofia get a few chat sessions with each other, during that awkward week where Derek's brother has killed some servants, and also almost killed Sofia.
To lighten things up, some "cute" moments occur while Sofia teaches Derek about modern technology, since he has been asleep for 400 years, prior to the novel's beginning.
Last item: Another name I find funny, is a spinoff trilogy from the author, titled A Shade of Kiev. The only thing I can imagine here is Chicken Kiev, that dish that involves baked chicken stuffed with butter. In real life, a shade too much of Kiev might involve some cholesterol problems.

Loved it! Light easy read, good to escape for a few hours. This reminds me of Erica Stevens' Captured series, which is what drew me to it in the first place. I enjoyed all of the characters, especially Derek and his struggle to maintain as much of his human empathy that he can. I look forward to the next book.
I absolutely loved A Shade of Vampire. I loved the fact that it wasn't your typical Vampire story and I loved that. The originality really kept me captivated. I fell for the characters, my heart went out more to Derek and his predicament. I love a book that brings out my emotions, I wanted to lash out to Lucas, I cried for Sofia and her situation.
Sofia has been taken against her will and finds herself falling for the last person expected.
Derek was woken from his sleep of four hundred years. He finds so much has changed but some things have remained the same, especially when it comes to his brother Lucas.
If you want a paranormal read unlike the others then I def recommend, A Shade of Vampire.

It took me a few books to really warm up to this (very, very long!) series. But it was well worth the read. And I read all 32-ish (so far, there will be more) of them rabidly. Inhaling sometimes two a day. I often grumbled about how short some of the books seemed, but they kept on getting better.
Even when one story line or generation seemed to come to a close, there was always MORE. I truly enjoyed how Bella Forrest wove the generations of the main characters into a new "season" or story line of books. I'm thoroughly addicted and proud to call myself a Shaddict lol (addicted to the Shade series).
These books are worth reading if you are into vampire romance (no sexual content). Tons of adventure and fabulous characters in a very well developed and believable world (many dimensions). Highly recommended.

Contemplating on telling the love of your life you like them is hard enough throw in being kidnapped, you have the means of survival, even when your kidnappers are showing restraint and keeping you 'safe' doesn't mean it's the safe you need. Sofia just thought she was normal but when she is taken to a place the sun doesn't shine, and people with fangs anyone would be on the offense. Especially when she takes to the prince of darkness himself, Derek Novak. Because she is human she is in constant danger, and with escape doesn't mean she will be able to get back home. The only thing to count in is the princes' word and even for him it's hard enough.
Waking up 400 years later to find that your siblings woke you up because they couldn't keep the place in order. Derek's way didn't go through and the kidnappings of humans are just the one thing that changed. They are slaves their purpose is to be the meal. The one to open his eyes is Sofia, who also opened a part of the self he thought he had lost. Protecting her is the only thing preventing him from tearing into her skin. She challenges him and even though she is young it's her presence that changes his mind. But how long can Sofia stay and if given a chance would she leave Derek behind, or will a greater darkness come and split them apart forever.
A Shade of Vampire literally had me wondering what is to come and even though I would hate to be taken, would my kidnapper be so generous. I love vampire stories and this gave me a taste into a world I would consider venturing into. All we got was one shade of this story now for the others to let us know what Sofia and Derek do next, plus could there be light where there is darkness.

WOW.......JUST WOW!!!! From the moment I started reading this book, I haven't been able to put it down! This book was way better than I expected. I can't wait to read Book 2! The only cons I found with this book was that it was too short and I am unable to get the second book from Kobo yet for my ereader. I highly recommend this book for vampire lovers. The only reason why I didn't give this book 5 stars was because it was a short book and I heard the second book was even better, so I'm saving my 5 star rating for book 2!!!!
