I'm not sure how I fell about this book.... it was okay, but there was nothing great about this book. There was enough for me to start reading book 2 but I have a feeling I will get bored with this series and not finish.
I love Derek and I want to set Lucas on fire.
This book is nothing like twilight. Its completely awesome, however, its illegal to end a book like that, I think. I wont be able to sleep tonight coz I will be making up the rest of the story :(. Am officially addicated, cant wait for the next one.

I loved this dark and different vampire story and I will be getting the 2nd book a shade of blood as soon as possible
I actually loved this story, even though it was a little short for me.
I really liked this book.
I've wanted to read this for years but it's such a long series, so before committing myself to this I read her Shade of Dragon series, which I wasn't too much a fan of. But months later, I said let's try this. I was quite surprised with how much more I enjoyed this one. The storyline is better. The writing is pretty good!
I'm happy I did! As always I don't like the short lengths of books Forrest writes, but the overall story was cute. It's books like this that bring me back to a time when all I read was paranormal books. Plus I like the fact that it it involves very traditional types of vampires. Although it's great the amount of books that feature "different" types of vampires, but I love reading one that goes back to that traditional.
Yes I agree with many of the other reviews, the romance in this book happens fast. There's not much build up, but I like that it's not so instant. She doesn't see him and is instantly in love. It takes a bit for her to trust him. And even though Darek is instantly taken by Sofia, even so, it's more of attraction-based than anything else. Love comes chapters later. Again, had the book been longer, it could have dragged out the romance and the falling part of the love. If she combined two books together then it could have been stretched out, but overall it is cute. and not so insta-love-like.
Glad her friend was killed, cause man was she annoying.
I enjoyed the opposite POV thing. As always I like Derek's more than Sofia's, but hey.
Overall I am not upset I read this. In fact I was pretty hooked and read it in two sittings, upset that I had to take a break in sitting 1. I will be reading the series, or at least all of Derek and Sofia's books and will go from there.

mysterious
slow-paced
Sofia Claremont is kidnapped to become a slave for the notorious vampire ruler, Derek Novak. Simply by being herself, she saves herself from becoming his meal. Soon they are enthralled with each other, which may mean Derek has to face off with his own family to keep her alive.
I know this was a novella, but I was very disappointed in the lack of character development in this story. I mean, I didn't like any of the characters at all. Sofia has no business at all falling for Derek. She was never even afraid of him, even after meeting him shortly after his vampire brother had tried to force himself on her. This was plain and simple insta-love, and there was no reasoning behind it.
I finished the story because it was so short, but so many things didn't make sense. The Blood Shade is an island of eternal darkness...but they have humans there. From a logical standpoint, don't those humans need some vitamin D?? This was never addressed and just happened to cross my mind. Also, Sofia and Derek both did things (or didn't do things) that infuriated me. The end was also pretty sudden and weird for me.
I'd like to thank the author for providing me with the book to review, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.

Spoiler
Sofia knew Lucas attacked her, but didn't tell Derek. Derek was pretty sure it was Lucas anyway, but did nothing--this is how he defends and respects the girl he loves?I'd like to thank the author for providing me with the book to review, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.
I love a good vampire story as much as the rest of you, but this one's just not very good. The author lacks a certain command of the English language, in terms of verb tenses. The reader has to suspend disbelief about a lot of things (more than usual, for a vampire novel). For instance, the vampire should speak in a more old-fashioned way, as he's recently been woken up after he'd been asleep for 400 years. It's pretty gross that humans are kidnapped and held against their will and that the protagonist eventually becomes ok with that. There are other things that bothered me, as well. I guess it was worth the price I paid for the book ($0.99). I think I'd give it 1.5 stars. I'm a bit concerned about all the people who gave the book 5 stars on Amazon.
