Hmm. The writing/translation of this is good, and it flows well/quickly, but it also might be too sci-fi for me? I feel like the memory police would have been more scary without the magical version of forgetting and disappearing.
an incredible look into how profoundly the people and things around you impact one’s sense of self

Bizarre, unfulfilling ending. Interesting concept.
The novel within the novel was highly symbolic, but creepy. Must suspend reality to comprehend.

Really got sucked into this book, loved the way it was written in a way that almost makes you forget little details like the characters in the book.
The dialog was interesting and flowed really well and I although I wouldn’t say it was subtle its commentary was also well done.
My main criticism is sometimes events felt like they were just thrown in because the writer didn’t know exactly how to progress the story or maybe felt like there wasn’t much action. I also would have liked to know a little bit more about the memory police past the one time we go their HQ.

"Stay a bit longer, like that," I told him. Though the feeling was empty, I wanted to watch him holding on to that void.
A quiet, heartrending dystopia of an island village that acclimates to the decay of memory, waking up some mornings to find they have lost their connections to some specific object, like birds and fruit and boats. A nameless novelist hides under her floorboards a man who retains his memory, and she strains to retrieve what she keeps losing for his sake. But with every loss, the way it empties out parts of her, the distance between them feels all the more insurmountable.
The actual eponymous memory police, that bureaucracy in place to enforce disappearances, comes not to matter. What makes the book especially devastating is how characters seek the comfort of letting go of all the things that no longer hold meaning for them. The futility found in this story, and in the entrenched narrative the novelist is writing to make sense of the loss, is painful to read, and lingered with me long after I set the book down.
