A meandering quandary on the existential dread and malaise associated with objects disappearing from the consciousness and presence of a small, unnamed island. Although opening with a fantastic premise akin to other dystopian novels based around the authoritarian control of certain thoughts and ideas, it struggled to find a harmonious middle ground between an introspective perspective in this hallowed world to a compelling narrative. Moments of serendipity combined with a meandering story made the reading experience labored at times, but not terrible in the slightest, as there were plenty of shining moments of poetic prose throughout the novel to better flesh out the characters in hand. The characters themselves felt alive, easy to imagine from stark, minimal details of appearance and behavior. This itself is a double-edged sword because while the characters were a strong point, keeping them within the vague confines of the story leaves a feeling of want, which may be the author's intention, but it does not make for a wholly satisfying read, especially with the rushed ending. All-in-all, while it does have its faults, it does not mean it is bad by any means. Ogawa's imagery and floral language manage to make this novel something to experience, to inspire, and to reflect. Read it and see how you come out of it.
