I liked the story, and the writing. In some areas, I felt like the translation was a little lacking. At first I completely hated the sections that were the MC’s novel, but it grew on me after the MC of that story started getting more characterization. This did a great job at presenting a dystopia and the reactions to it. Many would say that we are currently living in a dystopia and this book captures the ambivalence of the population very well. I liked that overall the reaction to authoritarian take over was “meh, we still need to eat.” I also enjoyed the idea that our MC and the old man were hugely revolutionary in that they undertook a very dangerous mission but were still unable to avoid the effects of the regime, and were still “meh” in general.

Saying this may prove how brain rotted I am, but I kind of wish more happened with the ending. I get the idea, but I guess I’m spoiled by like western storytelling and movies where the ending is always this big satisfiying conclusion. Though, in dystopia—in the real world—endings are much less entertaining than that.
