Mark Towse is a new to me author. When I came across Nana, I had to check it out. The cover alone caught my attention and creeped me out and the blurb sealed the deal.
If you think this is going to be your average visit to grandma’s house, you are completely wrong.
This book started out odd and got even more disturbing as the story unfolds. When Joan comes into the picture I was instantly creeped out and intrigued by her character. I felt this way about several of them. Towse brings a very odd bunch of characters to life. Once you have met them all your mind will be blown.
So many strange things are happening that will have you questioning everything that you just read. The events that take place at the community center make for a very dark and disturbing read. All I could think is poor Olly. I bet he had none of this in mind when he went to visit Nana. I enjoyed the mystery that was scattered throughout this book about Nana and what was yet to come with her.
All the madness leads to an ending that I was not expecting. This was my first read by Towse and I have to say it was gruesome, strange, and rather trippy. He has a wild imagination! I look forward to checking out more of his work.

This was a fun little horror novella. I liked the idea of elderly people being central characters as a unique twist to the typical story. While I do enjoy multiple points of view, I think there were a few too many here and it might have been more effective with 3-4 at most. Nana is big on over-the-top grossness, combined with humor which I enjoyed, just not quite as much as I’d hoped based on the praise I’ve seen going around.
This was such a fun novella! Ollie is less than thrilled to stay with his Nana overnight while his parents attempt to work out their relationship issues privately. He tags along to what was supposed to be a run of the mill talent show night in a retirement community. This quickly turns ominous, leaving Ollie to fend for himself during the turmoil that unfolds.
Towse did a wonderful job with this story, providing specifics that felt fully immersive while creating a fast-paced plot that made me devour the work in one sitting. Obviously, aging is not as unglamorous as described in Nana but, the way that the old people were described made me contemplate my personal unease surrounding mortality. Acute attention to detail created an aesthetic throughout the work that was sinister and unsettling, leaving me with a feeling of dread as I worked my way through. The macabre nature took me by surprise in the best way, as I would have never expected the story took the twists and turns that it did.
Thank you to Mark Towse for providing me with the ARC of Nana to read and review. The novella is available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. If you are a horror fan, I highly recommend this!

12 year old Olly is resistant to spending a night with his nana while his parents work out some marital issues. Probably for good reason.
The residents of Newcrest Haven aren't quite right. But Nana Ivy promises the young lad a night of fun with the other occupants, not to mention a slice of delicious cherry pie. They head off to a talent hall where a smorgasbord of aged care residents show off their slightly off kilter talents (who doesn't love a blood sacrifice right). Suddenly things turn dark as a kid his own age is bought to the stage and Olly realises he needs to get out; and fast. Will he make it out alive, or succumb to the desires of Newhaven?
This is one of those reads that will make you think ... wtf just happened to me, and I dig it. Fast paced, quirky, horrific and unputdownable.
