I can see and understand the cultural significance of this book, but man, parts of it were extremely boring. Whole chapters on how to cut cane sugar or pick cotton. Hopefully, and I'm certain it does, the movie will have a bit more impact.

This memoir gives a different look, or more, a deeper and more honest look into slavery. During the entirety of reading this memoir, I was disturbed, heartbroken, disgusted, and horrified. There was no holding back about the cruelty that the author and other slaves endured.

This is a very hard read but one that I think is needed.

Slavery must be one of the worst things one person can do to another. This is a remarkable story that makes me glad he found freedom again and sorry that so many other people didn’t.

important, good story, but not "ENGAGING" as such? Glad I read it, not sure I would again?

I had to read this for my African American Lit class and I honestly think it's a book that everyone should read. It was emotional and educational and I'm actually looking forward to starting my essay on it!

It’s easy to forget the harsh reality of what so many people had to endure for so long. This book is incredible and the language is very easy to follow. Everyone should have to read this in school.

Read it.

A hard read. Makes you confront the atrocities committed against fellow human beings, and how people could be treated like less than animals.

After all the hype, it was interesting to read the book the excitement was based on. It was a quick, easy read and covered his 12 years in bondage very seamlessly. It was enlightening to see slavery from the point of view of an educated man who had also experienced it, not something you often see with abolitionist literature from this time period.
