I loved this book yet again! I always feel for poor Daine, losing her mother at such a young age. Her fear that she went mad and that it might return! I love the premise that she can communicate with animals. I always wanted that power! I look forward to the next book!
Update: August 21st, 2016
I never realized before or at least noticed that Daine was so 'country'. She was very surprised and confused by how backwards and relaxed the royalty and nobles were in Tortall. At least she was able to switch to breeches so that she could be more comfortable!
I've always found Daine's magic in particular to be interesting to be able to speak to, heal, and if necessary control animals would be awesome! Oh and how could I forget
I always forget the age gap between Daine and Numair. He doesn't seem very old. Just shy of thirty but compared to Daine (13) he is much older. I think that will freak me out a little down the line when
Thayet and Jon are the coolest and most relaxed rulers. When you read Alanna's series and Kel's series I find myself to be a bit more frustrated with him but in Dain's series he's more relaxed and kind.
I was happy to see the princess, prince and Alann's and George's kids. If I'm not mistaken they don't turn up in any of Tamora's other books so it was nice to see them in this one.
On to the plot.
Daine realized and beginning to understand her wild magic was awesome. I'm also glad that she found a fellow wild magic user (Onua and the hostler) even if they both didn't have near the amount of power that she did.
I always feel bad at the beginning for Daine because she lost her mother and how her mother never told her who her father was. Plus her mother kept trying to test her for the 'Gift' and made Daine feel insecure and inadequate.
The appearance of the immortals was cool. I would hate to meet most of them in real life but the Griffins and the Dragon were awesome!
Carthak is going to be an issue in the next few books so I'm glad that the author didn't overwhelm us too much with that. :)
Still a 5 star book for me after so many re-reads! I'll probably end up reading this again next year!! lol. ^-^

This is probably the best of Pierce's novels, which is pretty sad considering I only think it deserves two stars. I think it's worth reading, but probably more something you'd want to check out of the library rather than spend money on.

While I can't really decide if Diane's story is my favorite over Alanna's I know that I truly loved this series. Who doesn't wish they could talk to animals and have that deeper understanding of the critters around them?
Tamara Pierce's building of the world Tortall leaves the reader interested in not only the immediate plot and characters but also the world itself.
It is a great book, as a fellow animal lover I enjoyed being captivated into the world that Diane lives in and following her on her first adventure.

Ah, The Immortals.
The Immortals is Tamora Pierce's second foray into Tortall after Song of the Lioness, this time following Veralidaine "Daine" Sarrasri as she discovers she has an unique type of magic that involves animals.
The Immortals series is a step up from Song of the Lioness, giving more rich detail and interesting characters that perfectly add to the world of Tortall. Not only do we get to meet a handful of new ones, but a few old faces make an appearance - Jonathan, Thayet, Buri, George, and of course, the Lioness herself, Alanna. It's interesting to see where these characters' lives have gone since SotL left off, and it's interesting to see how Tortall grows and prospers.
Daine's an interesting protagonist. Unlike Alanna, she's not a knight, but a mage, and she sees things a little differently in the world. Wild Magic is an excellent start to journey, and a recommended book overall.
Plus, it has a kraken. Who doesn't love krakens?
