I really enjoyed this book. I mean I know I've been saying that about just about ALL of Tamora Pierce's books I've read but it's true. They're very enjoyable books. Regardless of the age you are.
I love the idea of a girl who has the ability to communicate with animals. And who gets to learn how to use her personal magic to be able to heal animals as well.
I also like that instead of shunning her or acting scared of her or anything that the lady Daine travels with and the male mage she meets give her love and understanding and help her to control the parts of herself that scare her (and honestly if I were in her shoes, especially at 14 that would scare the shit out of me too).

Just as good as I remembered. I absolutely adore Tamora Pierce, but her Tortall books are my faves.

Without fail, reading Tamora Pierce's books will always make me feel better. They're forever my favorites, and my go-to books after reading something particularly upsetting. I'm glad I chose this one, especially, because Daine has been my favorite for a long time. Still well worth the five stars.

I'm so happy I decided to pick this up. It's a bit difficult to explain how I feel after finishing the book. It wasn't a cozy read, since some truly wild things happen to Daine, and she herself does some batshit things. I guess it's a sort of nostalgic feeling, despite the fact that I've never read anything by Tamora Pierce before. I think it's the way it's written that reminds me of books from when I was a kid... which makes sense since the book was published in the 90's. So it's a miracle that I didn't get my grubby little fingers on anything by Pierce back then.
I'm definitely going to continue the series.

It’s probably been 20 years since I first read this series, and Daine is as delightful as ever! Tamora Pierce can write the hell out of a young female lead, a great supporting cast, and magic system. I was truly transported to Tortall again while reading this book!
