An interesting and timely reimagination of Shelley's Frankenstein. The president/MASA movement stuff felt a little too on the nose. I just happened to see this book in the New Releases section at the library, and I'm glad I picked it up because I don't know that I would have found it otherwise!

I enjoyed this take on Frankenstein- it was the kind of classic sci-fi I like: a dystopia set in the near future with social critiques at its heart.

I especially appreciated the setting in which Chicano culture was the norm and everyone was pretty much bilingual English/Spanish.

My only complaint was that it was too short. I would have really liked to learn more about the world this book is set in, and what happens to the characters.

Over all, this was an enjoyably thought provoking book.

A modern retelling of the Mary Shelley classic, Frankenstein.

Thoughts & review:
I enjoyed this one! I believe this one was another no plot, all vibes for me. It was fast paced, chapters were shortish? Told from 3rd person pov, which I for once didn’t mind.

( keep in mind I haven’t read the classic, just went into this blind asf )

In this modern retelling, we have this unnamed paralegal man, who is falling in love with lawyer, Faustina Godínez. Meanwhile the president is trying to pass a law to ban reanimation.

The story overall focuses on the man and how he has been trying to fit into this new body of his and new life. While trying to figure out what he wants, how he feels, etc. Until Faustina comes along. I really enjoyed the love story, kinda wish we could’ve gotten a bit more there. After we have him trying to find more about his family, old life. He does gets a few details but not too much into details.

The story does have these political transcripts happening which bored me, maybe because I was more interested in the love story haha. But on the one hand it was kind of interesting to see how pharmaceutical companies were trying to rip off the reanimated people.. and i’m like damn i wonder what’s all fake in the real world.. questions questions

Alsooo this book made me so damn hungry. There was a lot of food talk, chilaquiles, winnies con huevo, and the main course… pan dulce!!

Overall this book was a nice read. If you’re looking for more of a story and want plots and twists, this may not be it for you. But if you want just ✨ vibes ✨ this will probably do it. I did notice it was repetitive but hey maybe that’s the point, as it mostly revolved around the man doing certain things.

“But when we put you together—me and my team—and completed the reanimation process, I thought you looked beautiful even with mismatched parts. Do you know why?” The man shook his head. “You were beautiful to me because you were alive,” whispered the doctor. “That’s it?” said the man. “What is more beautiful than life?”
