1. I am seriously over the Ethan and Merit drama. Yeah, it's normal for it to take a few books for MCs to get their stuff together. Yeah, they're likely to encounter issues even after they get their stuff together, BUT COME ON--every freakin' book is will they/won't they<---OVER IT.
2. Someone needs to stop watching Criminal Minds.
That is all.

Unfortunately I don't like this series as I did in the beginning. They seem to have become repetitive and since it was primarily the characters that I loved so much and lately there's nothing new to them, the last few books haven't brought me that much joy as the first ones. And the mystery/thriller side of the books seemed to have become really stupid and predictable. In this book especially the revelations at the end just proved that Merit, and everybody else for that matter, just weren't doing their jobs. And the author expected us to believe that Merit had some genius moments by solving the problems when she should have seen the obvious way earlier. Really, the characters seem not only not exceptionally smart, they seem a little stupid in my opinion.
But there are still things that I like about the Chicagoland vampires. This book, as the previous ones, is easy to read and there are still enough cute moments with some of my favorite characters (in this book mostly Merit and Jeff) to leave me with a good feeling. Ethan and Merit were good together too - there were things that irritated me in their relationship, but all in all I like how their love and relationship develops, especially considering this is an urban fantasy series where happy or good-written relationships are not that much.

This was an impressive improvement from the last book in the series. I breathed a huge sigh of relief to realize I was actually interested in what was happening in this book. Phew - I think you managed to save it Chloe Neill.
I think the reason I liked this one is because it seemed to go back to what made the series good in the first place - good, old fashioned mystery in a supernatural setting. The last couple of books were these really big ideas about all of supernatural kind - and now we're just back to murder. It was a nice change from the epic craziness.
I also liked the conflict between Ethan, Merit, Lacey and Jonah. It made me want to keep reading - no more of Ethan desperately trying to save Merit from himself (which really just made her seem pathetic and not strong at all). This time the conflict was almost more realistic, with jealous bitches everywhere.
Overall, a vast, vast improvement over book six. And I can honestly say I'm once again looking forward to reading the next book in the series rather than dreading it.

I really enjoy the interplay of the characters. I like how the author explores relationships of all kinds; between friends, between lovers, between co-workers. However, I do feel that the mystery/action of the week is sometimes an afterthought to the base of world making.
O no… I’m starting to get that sinking feeling that happens when you start to fall out of love with a series. I mean, in the beginning I wasn’t completely sold on the series because there was a lack of traction. But once the traction caught on… HOLY SMOKES! That was some amazing narrative work. The creative decisions were so bold! I mean she killed off Ethan in book 4! Just like, BOOM! She killed off the main love interest and then found a way to bring him back that totally took me by surprise. The storytelling was so provocative. Now it’s just getting predictable and dare I say mundane.
Here’s the deal: I’m a huge fan of Merit as a character. She’s been pretty amazing up until recently. She has such inner strength and great intelligence. I loved seeing her solve the mysteries and being a de facto vampire cop. LOVED IT. That was the main selling point for me. House Rules and the previous novel both felt lacking on that thing I love. I’m just not all that interested in the inner workings of the vampire government and constant stupid relationship drama. I really liked the “detective” aspects of the story and now they're just so… predictable. I don’t want to repeat myself over and over anymore so the last thing I’ll say is that I think my problem is that I’m just bored and don’t want to hear about the same few issues they’ve been dealing with lately. I want to move on to something else.
I don’t want to sound like a complete Gloomy Gus. There were also a few things that were great in here too! Merit had some witty one liners in here. Here’s one:
Here’s another good one from the loveable Jeff Christopher:
Speaking of the ever charming Jeff we finally get to see what animal he shifts into! Also, the end action sequence was pretty great. I mean it was just full of classic action movie awesome and filled with explosions and rescues and the bad guy loosing and the good guys being all heroic. It was everything I wished the whole book was. Seriously, the last couple chapters saved this from being a complete wash for me!
So like I said, I have LOVED Merit and her vampire detective charm for so long. It just seems this major concept is getting a bit flimsy for me as the series progresses. I’m hoping it’s just a middle of the road slump and things will start to pick back up again. If not, and this is just how the series is going to be from now on, I just don’t think I will want to keep going. Awesome action movie explosions can only go so far.

“Okay, then.”
Ethan looked at me. He watched me, really checking my mood and whether that “okay” meant okay in the male sense (“okay”) or the female sense (“possibly okay; it depends on what you say next”).
Here’s another good one from the loveable Jeff Christopher:
“Let me check,” Jeff said. “I can run them through a program that flags image manipulation. Beep beep boop boop.”
Speaking of the ever charming Jeff we finally get to see what animal he shifts into!

I enjoyed this book and I love this series. I'm still mad that Ethan came back, though, and I still would rather see Merit with Jonah. I do wish we'd seen more of Catcher and the other guys in this book, though. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
