Christian or Tucker? Christian or Tucker? My struggle throughout this book. Pick a team! But I just couldn’t. I love them both in different ways, as does Clara I suppose. I totally understand her internal struggle. It is almost impossible to choose!
I liked this book as much as the first. There were awesome new developments in this one, some that took me by surprise and others I saw coming. I’m happy with the direction the story is going, I think. I’m looking forward to reading the third book!

When a friend asked me if I wanted her extra copy of Hallowed I didn't hesitate to scream "YES" a million times at the computer. I then realized I also had to respond to the email. Either way, I'm SO excited I got a chance to read this one early, it was amazing and much better than Unearthly! Hand did an awesome job continuing Clara's story, I laughed, I cried, I swooned!
Clara ends up being a much more interesting character this time around, and someone I could really relate to. She goes through a lot of struggles trying to figure out her purpose, and Christian becomes a prominent part of her life. We see a lot more of Christian in Hallowed which I actually really liked! Christian is such a sweetheart, I'm definitely conflicted about whose side I'm on! Jeffrey is a huge enigma throughout the story too! I kept wondering where he was during that fire, and his increasingly hot-tempered attitude makes it seem like some dark things are going on inside him.
I actually spoiled myself on a Teaser Tuesday when it came to the person dying, but it was still a ridiculously sad moment for me! I was wiping away tears throughout the last 1/4th of the book or so! Seriously, I was bawling my eyes out! I always love a book that can evoke so much emotion that it makes me cry. The rest of the story was amazing, I really enjoyed everything that happened. Some things are revealed that really had me excited, and a lot of events unfold in a way that has me dying for the third book!
If you haven't read Unearthly yet, you should really go out and get yourself a copy, just so you can read Hallowed. It's not every day that I enjoy a sequel more than the first book, but I really loved this one!! I can't wait to find out what Hand has in store for Clara in the third book, but I really don't want to wait! If you love books about angels and the paranormal with some romance thrown in, you'll definitely love Hallowed.

- The love-triangle really takes over the story in this book. Ugh! I'm so done with Tucker and Christian! Clara is starting to annoy me as well.
- The relationship between Clara and her mom is frustrating. They are supposed to be close, but Clara's mom doesn't want to tell her anything about what she is! I don't understand why she hides so much.
- I want more about the "purposes" in the story. I wish the book focused more on that. It seems like the visions that Clara gets are more fortune telling than an idea of what direction to go in life.
- The ending is sad, but the reader is prepared for it.
- I liked meeting all the new characters, especially Clara's dad. I want to know more about him.
- I'm debating on whether I want to finish the series or not. The romance is getting tiresome. I think I'll finish the last book though.

3.5 stars. I just have a lot of feelings.
It's hard to rate this book because I think it would appeal to people for different reasons, and those same reasons might make you hate it. So the reason I can't rate it any highter might make you shy away as well. In the immortal words of Michael Scott on Casino Night - "Love.Triangle.Drama." I really hate it. I think it's contrived, rarely adds to character development and generally lessens anyone's ability to see whatever else an author was pulling together thematically. Oh, but look - at least Clara knows it's cliche. For what it's worth, it's a believable conundrum, but it falls into a million pitfalls - Maybe something new could have kept me from being let down by those moments.
However, for the follow up in a series, it's stellar. It meets the requirements of heightening the central tension, growing the main character and introducing new information without just being a bridge to the final installment. Brava, Ms. Hand.
But we lose a lot of the connection to the some of the characters that we had in Unearthly in the process (Wendy, Angela, and TUCKER). Where is the guy she fell in love with? His absence is painful. Not just the amount of pages he doesn't get, but his actual presence in Clara's life. He seems an afterthought, like he's the placeholder boyfriend that she pits her connection to Christian against until she can figure it all out, instead of him being the reason she made a life changing choice in the first place. No bueno.
I also felt like there as a big pile of steaming info dump in the last third of the book. Clara's mother gives her all kinds of information that would have been better suited to Clara and Angela or Clara and Jeffery coming to light on their own.
But the reality is, the book made me feel. It was emotional in the best of ways, and I spent the last hour or so crying steadily. Beautiful goodbyes throughout. But I hate goodbyes. #Harumph

the asking to dance at prom, the "I didn't know what you wanted to eat - oops there's your bf" conversation, and the inevitable pop in the mouth pissing contest. However, for the follow up in a series, it's stellar. Spoiler
The angel congregation and the large amount of angel-bloods in their town? This should have been something Angela smoked out a while ago. Jeffery's big revelation at the end of the novel is suspect as well. It's been hinted at since the end of Unearthly, with is lead-colored wings, but Clara studiously avoids him, any suspicion he gives off, and his erratic behavior. And Clara's mom can read MINDS but she never gave any hint that Jeffery had his own purpose that he was working through in Unearthly? A purpose that was closely related to, if not completely intertwined with Clara's? She never insisted that they talk it out when Clara's purpose was all they talked about for months? WHY. WHY. WHY.But the reality is, the book made me feel. It was emotional in the best of ways, and I spent the last hour or so crying steadily. Beautiful goodbyes throughout. But I hate goodbyes. #Harumph
My full review!
So, in this sequel to Hallowed, Clara is trying to piece together the fire, what was supposed to happen. She can't seem to figure out what she was supposed to do that faithful night. And all the while, things are changing. Clara is forced to learn things, whether she likes it or not. And not all of things are good.
Before anything, let's take a moment to admire the absolutely gorgeous cover! It's stunning! I'm going to seriously have to buy the book, if only for the cover! [If you couldn't guess, I love beautiful covers.] I totally judge books by their covers, and this book lived up to its cover!
I think it should be known that I stayed up until 3 AM reading this book. Yes, 3 AM. I'm not even exaggerating a bit. I finished the book at 2:56 AM, and then thought about it for another good 10 minutes, then finally fell asleep. I don't think the right word is addicting, but compelling. This book just made me want to read and read, to figure what was next, what was going to happen. There was a lot of suspense, lots of it, which is what really made the book compelling. Another thing that made this book so amazing, so compelling, are the plot twists. There were just things that I half-suspected, things that I probably should have seen coming, and things that just plain surprised me, things I could have never expected happening, but they did. I don't think Ms. Hand over-did the twists, I think they were carefully placed to make you want to gobble up the book, which is in fact, exactly what I did.
But the main thing I must have loved about this book is that it grabbed your heart, made you want to cry. Characters in this book are facing lots of grief, and that grief is conveyed so so well, that at time, I felt like my heart was wrenched along with the character's, and I had tears in my eyes at multiple points and it was the middle of the night. So that's a pretty amazing thing, considering I never cry, especially when I'm reading in to the night. But I literally had tears in my eyes. The writing was just so phenomenal, I felt like I was with the characters, like I was a part of their life. It's a hard thing to do, but Ms. Cynthia Hand did an amazing job at it. I don't think I could have felt more connected to the story than I did.
I could honestly go on and on about the things that I loved about this book. But one important thing is that we did get to see more Christian in this book, and that's something I definitely liked. He was there in the last book, but I feel like he's a little more involved in the book this time around. We learn some pretty interesting stuff about him as well, and even though it wasn't utterly surprising, I think it was good information to know.
Also, we got answers in this book. It was about time. I hate it when authors stretch things out so long, where we get no answers for multiple books, but we got some pretty good answers in this book, about a multitude of things, things that I thought were minor at first, but really weren't. I really don't want to spoil it for anybody, so I'll just leave it that.
Why didn't I give this book a full 5 stars? Well, the main reason is our dear Clara herself. For basically the whole part of the book, except the end, she makes bad and plain stupid decisions, as well as a few other characters in the book. But it was mainly Clara. It just made me mad at her, even though I know I really shouldn't blame her. But, honestly, they were just so selfish and stupid and ignorant at times, I wanted to punch her. But she did really mature at the end, which is something I definitely liked, and that really made the book for me. Honestly though, having Clara be a pain throughout the whole book was just plain frustrating to me. She shouldn't have acted like she did.
Other than that, and a few minor problems that I had with the book, it was amazing. I was so afraid that this second book wouldn't live up to the first, especially with all the buzz and hype that the first book got, but I think this will please readers of the series, like me. =)
The book, thank goodness, didn't end with a total cliffhanger. I would say it ended similarly to Unearthly, in a place where you kind of wanted to know more, but you were okay with the book ending, unlike certain books I know *shoots scary look at particular books*. It's hard to explain, but I think the book ended well. But I still am dying to get my hands on the next one!
Overall, this book lives up to my expectations, and I think it may or may not live up to other people's expectations. Some may think it's alright, others might think it's amazing. I loved it in a different way than I loved Unearthly, and it was definitely different from the first book. This book deals with very real and true things, but Ms. Hand adds some things to it to make it, you know, fantasy. It's different from Unearthly, but in a totally good way. It's absolutely and utterly worth reading, and it's one of my favorites of the year!

I read the first part of this trilogy something like a year ago and fell in love. Clare is a pretty awesome main character; strong, honest and interesting young woman. The love triangle still irritates me a little, especially in the end (I guess it wouldn't irritate me as much if Clare had done like I wanted her to do...). But I really like all the characters and I'm definitely going to buy the last volume too. It's a nice change to read about other supernatural creatures than vampires and weres. I like the whole angel thing. Hallowed didn't have much action, but there was lots of emotional stuff going on.
This is such a great series. It is one of my favorites and I’m so glad that Hallowed followed in Unearthly’s path of greatness! If you have yet to read Unearthly… PLEASE DO!
These books aren’t your typical angel story. One of the reasons why I like them is because Clara knows she’s an angel. She’s almost always known growing up, and I loved that aspect of the story. Many times in YA the characters are discovering something about themselves that the don’t know about. I like those types of stories too, but because Unearthly is different it really stood out to me. If you’re looking for a great story, that’s well written. Put that check mark by Unearthly and Hallowed because they are those types of books!
I LOVED the story in Hallowed. You know how sometimes those “second” novels can be, right? A lot of filler and not much story. I am happy to report that Hallowed is not a filler novel. In fact, I think this story might have sucked me in a bit deeper than Unearthly. I never knew what was going to happen next. I might have had an idea about one of the plot lines and I was right, but oh it was still so good. Sometimes knowing isn’t necessarily a bad thing. THIS BOOKS IS HOW I WANT ALL MY YA PARANORMAL ROMANCE TO BE!
This story broke my heart! BUT IT WAS SO GOOD!
And I absolutely LOVE the characters in this novel. Their entire dynamic, it just works so well. We get to see another side of Christian in this story, as well as a few other characters…. but that may be a bit spoilery so I won’t say anything about that! We also meet a slew of new characters that I know you will enjoy just as much as I did!
I have absolute faith in Cynthia Hand! I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.
