Not entirely what I expected but then again my standards weren't too high given that this is a Disney book. It was cute and a fast read and definitely leads up to the Disney Channel movie. All in all it wasn't bad and I kind of liked it LOL.

this was such a cute and fun read! I loved reading all the little jokes and hints to the movie coming out. I can't wait to see the movie and see what happens next.

I liked this book a lot. I thought it would be like the Disney movie, and Disney just decided to make it into a movie, but it is about the events that happened to the characters right before they are invited to Auradon. It was very interesting to see their lives before they moved, especially their relationships with their parents, and how they all became friends.

A prequel to Disney's Descendants. Reads very much like fan fiction, especially in the beginning.

The main characters are the children of Disney villains and no expense is spared to shove that in your face.
I felt like the introduction was too long: the clothes of the four kids are described in meticulously boring detail, as well as their lodgings, the disgusting food they have to eat and the "evilness" of the inhabitants of the isle.
The interesting bit, to me, doesn't start until we're 200 pages into the book. I won't spoil what happens next, but suffice it to say that they go on a quest to a place no one has been to in twenty years and it takes them all of one chapter to reach their destination.

Out of the four protagonists, the two girls are the most interesting. I like that even though protagonist Mal is described as a bully, she's still likable: her psychology is complex enough that I understood why she did the horrible things she did. Evie is a little blah, but her mommy issues concerning beauty can be very relatable to young girls.
Jay is the least developed character, I think. He feels a bit like an afterthought, like "we need another boy". He never gets enough backstory to evolve into a round character, also because his issues don't deviate enough from the other three characters'. Carlos at least felt needed to the plot, but I feel like the story would evolve the exact same way without Jay.

Another thing I didn't like was that Prince Adam was referred to as King "Beast". Um, he's not a beast anymore - didn't you see the movie? Isn't it sort of the whole point that this book is based on the lore from Disney's animated classics?
The same goes for queen Grimhilde consistently being referred to as "Evil Queen", like she doesn't have a name of her own. Bugged me to no end.

I wonder what the movie is like? I'll have to watch it now.

I read this because I had an obsession with Mal from the Disney movie based on the books. It was interesting reading this after seeing the first and second movies which have nothing to do with how the gang of VKs originally got together. I mean,
SpoilerI hate that Mal and Evie were at odds through most of this novel because I totally love their friendship. And the boys still constantly pick on each other. I did like the flirtation between Evie and Jay.
