Good
Volker (the Moonlight Wraith) and Rowe
As a human, Rowe has always believed herself to be powerless, but meeting Volker opens up her eyes to a secret that her mother kept from her.
As the recently usurped ruler of Air and Amethyst, Volker needs Rowe’s help in getting back his crown, because he knows that the witch who took it, definitely had help.
Between the two of them, they manage to unravel a story of betrayal and power that will change everything!
This is an enjoyable read in the Immortal Vices and Virtues world, it only briefly mentions the characters and events from book one, so no real spoilers and no need to read the other books in this multi-author series first.
It’s not quite enemies-to-lovers, but close, and it’s fun to watch Rowe as she begins to believe in her own abilities, and falls for the former king.
There’s quite a bit of action here, with a morally grey hero in Volker, and a precarious political situation for the characters as a whole.
An entertaining read for urban fantasy and PNR fans.

This series is shaping up to be so good! Granted, I enjoyed the first book more, but this has its own charm. More slow burn than Reject Me, a little less steamy but with lots of tension and more mystery.
These books really have become a perfect, welcome escape.

I wanted to like this based off the first book, but it was slow and the chemistry wasn’t there for me. Dnf
Too slow, didn't understand some of the changes in character behaviour between books.
I'm talking about Andreas specifically. He and a bunch of others beat the shit out of Danni, Adora AND Rowe herself in Book 1 when they were growing up. I did not understand how suddenly Rowe was okay with that and was now besties with him, despite his cruelty. I tried to ignore it every time he was in a scene, but it just kept bothering me, and it started to change how I perceived Rowe. I started see her has naive and clearly not the brightest crayon in the box. Finally I got frustrated enough, between my confusion with Andreas personality switch and the slow pace so far (compared to Books 1 and 3) that I decided to DNF. I even skipped to the end when I saw mentions of the "twist", figuring it was related to Andreas. It was. I still think Rowe is stupid to become besties and crush on her childhood abuser/bully/tormentor.
There are enough books in the series that I'm not too upset with DNF-ing and just moving onto the next one.

I liked this overall, but the whole story gets a star knocked off because the entire story is about the “sad pitiful normal human surrounded by supernaturals who turns out to be more special than any of them”… bah.

So this was pretty good. I do wish it had been longer because parts of it just felt a little rushed, but it was a fairly quick read. I was not expecting the twist and was very pleasantly surprised at where this book went. I really enjoy a series set in the same world written by different authors because it really lets me see authors that I probably wouldn’t typically read. I would definitely be interested to read more by this author.
I didn't like the characters as much in this one. At this point, I'm not sure what the benefit of being in a house is. They seem to treat the lowest people horribly. Villian wasn't a twist but the villiany was.
