Really enjoyed the narrator's vocal performance. She did a great job.

Being a massive Indiana Jones fan, I was all too hopeful that this book would scratch my itch for archaeological adventure while also presenting as a fun romcom. I admit that I saw the title and was immediately taken.

However… it was a bust. It had some fun adventure elements and the plot of looking for the final resting place of a fictional Mexican warrior was really promising. I enjoyed some of the parts where the characters actually found the Aztec ruins/remains. But then it just kinda went overboard with stereotype—ridiculous high stakes, multiple potential villains, cliche romance.

Yeah. The romance. It was pretty cringe. And unfortunately, the FMC reads like she was written by a man, the way she is described and even the way she talks sometimes. The MMC’s POV chapters definitely didn’t help when referring to her body and skills etc. The sex scenes seemed way too heavy on the physicality and reputation of the FMC than on the actual passion and relationship between the two. Idk, everything the FMC did seemed over-sexualized, especially considering a major part of her character was trying to escape those stereotypes. It just seemed like the author fed too much into it that it sort-of had the opposite effect that she was going for. Maybe I just found the writing too cheesy and awkward. And the fact that the MMC was THIRTY-EIGHT-YEARS-OLD and acted the way he did and said the things he did really gave me the ick.

It was a quick read overall and I never wanted to DNF it, I just was disappointed with it.

Honestly as soon as I read the title of this book, I knew I had to read it. Indiana Jones romcom where Indiana is a kickass Latina? Sign me up! And it was absolutely delightful. Enemies to lovers isn’t usually my trope of choice but I think it was done well here. I liked the character development where both of them learn to open up and acknowledge the ways in which they both contributed to the “enemies” part. And the dig was a fun and tense adventure, very much in the spirit of an Indiana Jones or Mummy movie. The only problem I really had was that “the grovel” of the hero just wasn’t quite enough for me. He’s still an adorable hero and I liked him but I wanted something a little more for the grovel. It’s not really bad; there are genuine attempts at groveling and character growth. And I can’t say what more I really wanted, but it just didn’t quite seem like enough to balance out the jerk behavior. Still a very enjoyable book and I would totally read the further adventures of these two!

This is actually a review for the audiobook.  Unique concept of two previously competitive archeologists teaming up on an Aztec dig and rekindling a years-old flame.  I definitely appreciated the strong female characters, especially the lead with a career in STEM.  There was an added mystery about possible theft from the site, but the personal issues of the 2 lead characters did not draw me in.

Can't see myself liking Ford after it was revealed he literally stole from Corrie repeatedly and the immediate over sexed inner dialogue from them both was cringe especially from Corrie who knows Ford sabotaged her but still is attracted to him. He puts her down in from of everyone and shes upset but then hears one compliment right after and gets hot and bothered...

This is an enemies to lovers set at an archeological dig in the rainforest of Mexico. And let me tell you it’s not just the weather that made this book hot and steamy. Dang, Ford and Corey are all kinds of sexy together. I also loved that this book had adventure and even mystery worked in.

There was so much I enjoyed about this book. And a few things that I really didn’t.

What I loved:
- the adventure is so fun. Adventure romance needs to be more common because it’s exciting and sexy and different. I loved their work to find Chimalli! And the overall mystery of who was sabotaging them was super fun.
- Corrie was absolutely awesome. She is funny and badass and strong. Her vulnerabilities and sensitivity are real - battling against misogyny and beauty bias in a serious industry. I wanted her to win and get everything she wanted.
-the secondary cast of characters were fab and fun. Sunny especially.
- the sex was awesome and hot. Segura built great tension.

What I didn’t love
- Ford and the decisions he made. He lied to Corrie almost the entire book! Yea he was hot and the enemies to lovers tension was so fun but I hated that he literally took so much from her. I also dont feel like he actually appreciated how badass she is and really just was obsessed with how hot she is. He goes from being all the men she is angry at (folks who focus on her body, don’t think she’s good enough, etc) to her absolute love without actually any reflection on his part. His whole “I heard people call her shit names and didn’t say anything” never felt redeemed to me. And the redemption didn’t feel enough - yes it was fun and action-packed but I wanted to Corrie make him sweat more. Like Corrie 100% deserves more.
- the lack of people realizing that being bi is a thing. There’s an entire paragraph of “I thought you were into Corrie how can you be fucking a dude” like ummmm it can be both?????
- the ending wrapped up too quickly. I did love the actual end (I wonder if she’d write more in this series) but the action ended too soon
