Very different from the TV adaptation. Far more complex. And the Bath detail is delightful
adventurous mysterious

It is always nice to read the beginning of a series. This detective is old school and celebrates this fact. He is not nice to his peers. I am just tired of curmudgeonly inspectors/detectives. The plot was interesting enough for me to finish, but I have no desire to read more.

I decided to start the Peter Diamond series when I got an ARC of Lovesey's latest entry and really liked it. As luck would have it audible had this first book in the series included in my my membership to December 31st and I loved it. There's something about a curmudgeon character that I love as I find my inner curmudgeon. Very satisfactory police procedural with lots of red herrings but all the clues in place. I'd have given it a five if I weren't so particularly fond of the most recent entry. It proves there is always room to grow. Definitely plan to read the entire series. Enjoy

I didn't hate "The Last Detective," but by the halfway point or so, I was ready to be done with it. I won't be delving into the further adventures of Peter Diamond.

The first Peter Diamond book I listened to/read was #11, because it is narrated by my audiobook boyfriend Simon Prebble. I decided to go back to the beginning and listen to the first.

Boy, Peter Diamond has mellowed over the years. He is pretty unlikable for much of The Last Detective - grumpy, close-minded, judgmental, unwilling to change. But he is pretty interesting all the same, and now that he has (spoiler, but his book was published over 25 years ago!) quit his job I have to listen to the next one to find out how he gets his job back. The ending of this one was twisty but not very believable. I really enjoyed the Bath setting.

10 stars as usual for the narration, four stars for the writing/plot/characters.

Rather pokey, old fashioned British police procedural set in Bath.

Writing is good, with good descriptive prose. Although, the story is not really gritty enough for my taste. The curmudgeonly Peter Diamond grows from book-to-book in the series.

Worth reading, if you need a vacation from British police procedurals set in London, Manchester or Scotland.
