There are other worlds than these. Probably a 3.75.
This was a solid ending to the series—emotional and sweet. Also, I JUST finished the Dark Tower series right before I started this one, and the tie in to the Dark Tower was a VERY nice touch. However, I feel like if you HAVEN’T read Dark Tower, you would miss a lot of what’s going on in Gwendy’s Final Task, and might have more questions than answers. It might not be TOTALLY necessary to read Dark Tower before the Gwendy series, but I would recommend it because it would certainly help make sense of a lot.
I was going to give it 2 stars because it felt slow and boring at the beginning but it became much better by the end, but in my opinion the first book still the best one.
3.5 rounded up. There were parts I enjoyed but I just feel like there could have been a lot more done with the story.
This was nice and stuff. The whole premise just doesn’t feel very believable. I think this one was better than the second book, but not much. Gwendy’s Button Box could probably have stayed a standalone book and not a trilogy.
“People don’t need a button box to do horrible things. There’s plenty of evil fuckery in the human spirit.”
I’m so glad I read the redeeming final installment in the Gwendy trilogy after part two was such a let down. I struggled with a few of the more conveniently far fetched plot points (Alzheimer’s and space travel), but it was a very well developed story, and the Dark Tower references pulled the whole thing together. I loved the ending, and I shed more than a few tears. No one writes characters and situations more beautifully than Mr. King in my opinion.

A solid end to the Button Box trilogy. You can see the influence of King in this story much more, which balances out Chizmar's tendency to try to shove too many things into the story that go nowhere. (spoilers below)

LAST WARNING!!!
I was actually fine with the whole "Gwendy goes to space" story line. It's implausible, but fine, it didn't bother me too much. Sure, she was a bit of a Mary Sue, but they did a good job of writing that into the story. The chocolates improved her life, blahblahblah. The one part of the story that really bothered me was the emphasis given to Ryan being run over. It smacked of them trying to set up a spin-off, and I did not appreciate it.

Far better than the second. Still a loose end or two and somewhat predictable, the I'm a sucker for tie-ins to Stephen King's universe.
