Really enjoyable odyssey of a group of former Texas rangers deciding to drive a herd of cattle to Montana in the near post civil war era. Some really good character development and great scenic descriptions. Ultimately this seems to be a book about the inability of men and women to form balanced love relationships. Example after example of love given but not returned and the negative consequences that ensue. It is all to clear that this is the underlying theme as the final scene of the book recounts the suicide of a very unimportant character due to the unreturned love of a woman who was a prostitute in his saloon. It seemed to have nothing to do with the story but it summed up the multitude of more central examples of unreturned love.
I’m struggling to remember the last book that felt so immersive; I really feel like I accompanied the outfit on their journey. Lonesome Dove is truly everything I want in a book. Insightful, witty, and heart-wrenching with captivating storylines that collide in sometimes unexpected ways. Some of the most compelling characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading about are contained within this book. What a beautiful story about loyalty, humanity, and life. #LiveLaughLonesome
Writing so beautiful and a story so profoundly moving that any review of mine could never do it justice. I will never forget these places. I will never let these characters, with all their richly complex hopes, dreams, fears, and regrets, go. I don't think I'll get over the experience of reading this for a long time, and I don't really want to.
