I enjoyed reading this so much and then was Everly disappointed in the end. I can't explain why without spoilers, though.
I then started the second book, Children of God, and found that bogging down.
Also the continuation of the story in the second book reinforced my disappointment with the first book.
But I will leave the door starts.

A science fiction novel that focuses on the social sciences...

Best I've read in a LONG time. Read it. Now. For serious.

4 stars? 5 stars? I'm kind of in shock from this one, so may have to come back to it.

Sort of "A Prayer for Owen Meany" set in the dystopian future (and partially on another planet).

Finished on the Amtrak from Albany, NY to Emeryville, CA.

An ode to how little cultural relativism makes any sense to men with power. Maybe I'm weird but felt like a lot of the things they were all super shocked by in the hearings were just not that crazy, considering the alien planet context... Something to say here too about gendered reactions to rape but I will stew on that and not post it on freaking goodreads.

Enjoyed the book overall, though slow in the first basically half. Well written and fun to read, with a little cheesiness during basically all of Anne's scenes especially those of the dinner parties although they were also very sweet and compelling.

At the center of the book is a discussion of the problem of evil. The book is set up as religious propaganda to answer resolve it.

The pacing was unbearably slow and the author often reported to just telling the reader that happened instead of showing us. I will say that there were times where the prose were poetic and clever, but the religious propaganda, the poorly thought out conclusions to the problem of evil, uninformed representations of atheism and agnosticism, and horrible pacing made this book one of the worst I've read.

Her world building was interesting, but it took 20 of 32 chapters to get to anything interesting.

Jesus that was a doozy

What else do you want in a work of science fiction?

I hope they never adapt it to the screen.
