One for the Tolkien scholars. It was fascinating to see how the story of Beren and Luthien evolved and how it was told in different forms. I don't usually read a lot of epic poetry, but once I got into the groove it was a lot of fun.

I went into this expecting only the narrative and came out with a commentary on the iterative process of Tolkien and how the story of Beren and Luthien evolved. It was interesting to read how the story changed over time, but it wasn’t necessarily what I was after. 3/5

Beyond beautiful. I'm not usually one for versions, at least on the first read, but this was wonderful to see unfold, with the villain Tevildo first and in the later lay, Thu, and the lay itself was spectacular. I like to think I love epic poetry, but that's not really well–realised; I usually give up, at some early point. But with this Lay of Leithian – I could not stop reading. It could not have been more beautifully told, as a story, than in this poem form. And then it ends, unfinished, because no more was written – but I'm so glad it exists because of how beautiful it was, I was recalling snippets in tetrameter, or whatever form the poem is in and. Music, man.

This was actually the second book I read in the legendarium (following the hobbit I could never get into the lord of the rings trilogy) but this writing style just snapped my brain into place, and I'm blitzing through LOTR as we speak. Favourites were Huan and Finrod Felagund.
