Maybe the fact that this was for school ruined it for me. Or maybe it's the fact that the original story was written in the 14th century. Talk about a classic. I personally think it has a rather predictable ending. Don't read this unless you enjoy either short stories about King Arthur's court, or are required to for school.

Enjoyed this story more than I expected!

*4.5

4 stars cuz it's genuinely good, and depending on the transition, it's easy to follow as well. The only thing is, I did depend on the essays at the back of my edition to understand the significance of the epic. Essentially it suffers the same curse that afflicts old classics: we're just not their audience:/. BUT! As an Arthurian legend, it's amazing!

Yet keeping calm the knight
just quipped, “Why should I shy
away. If fate is kind
or cruel, man still must try.”

The kind of classic everyone should read. The plot is intriguing and pretty straightforward, the imagery is beautiful, especially when it comes to nature and the passing seasons, and the text just flows very nicely. It's short enough that you can read it in a day or two, and rich enough that you'll want to do it more than once.

I really enjoyed the Armitage translation, others may be more accurate to the source his seemed to be the best at bringing out the poetry and really relishing in the alliteration, with passages like:

Staff came quickly and served him in style
with several soups all seasoned to taste
