Kinsey has just moved on to her revamped apartment and celebrated her birthday when she discovers she’s on a hit list together with a judge and prosecutor who were collectively responsible for putting a particular con in jail. Mindful of the contract on her life, Kinsey takes on a small job, to check up on an elderly woman living out on the edges, where she’s run off the road and eventually capitulates to the protection of Dietz, a fellow investigator. Can she figure out what’s going on with the scared old lady and stay one step ahead of her would-be assassin? Time spent with Kinsey is always interesting and entertaining!

I'm really glad I discovered this series. The books are fun, well crafted and each time I read one, I feel like I'm settling in to hear more from a dear friend who I've grown to love. The stakes are high in these books but never so high that you ever really feel afraid for Kinsey's life. You know that she will always make it out alive no matter how bad things get and there is something really comforting in that. These books have become like comfort food for me. While the central mystery in this one felt a bit more muddled and hard to follow, it was just good to spend a few hours in the company of Kinsey Millhone. She's such a great character. I really do enjoy spending time with her. On to the next one, I guess!

a bit coincidental, but enjoyed the ride to the Mojave desert
I had not read one from this series in a long time.
On the plus side: the story pulled me right in, she has a terrific sense of humor of the hard boiled flavor, and the world of the late eighties— visits to a phone booth for more secure conversations, shiny jumpsuit as the height of fashion…oh wait, that’s happening again— was interesting to contemplate.
On the other side, Kinsey’s life is a mess, full of dumb choices with subsequent angst— and she is more sane than most of the other neurotic or psychotic characters. Except Henry, he’s a dear. Also there was a bit of deus ex machina about how the two main story lines converge and it was based on something I’m pretty sure the Dietz character would never have missed.

Another decent story but it took a while to get to the action.
