In the end, I really enjoyed this book. I have always been a fan of the movie adaption and I'm glad I finally gave the book a chance.

I will admit, I found the prose a bit hard at times to follow and thus it really slowed my usual reading speed down quite a bit. This is a book I could normally finish on the same day but instead it took me three.

I felt there were some scenes that stretched out a bit longer than they needed to or the narrator was focusing on things that weren't really important in the moment. However, the drama and intensity of the action was enough to carry the plot forward and had me looking forward to knowing how our mysterious narrator would survive.

H.G. Wells does have a brilliant and descriptive style that made everything feel very alive & it's incredible to see what kind of imagination someone from his time period had!

Probably would give this book of a 3.5 out of 5 if I could, as while I definitely enjoyed the novel, its definitely my least favorite of the three Wells Sci-Fi novels I have read (The Invisible Man and Time Machine being the other two). The first half of this book was kind of a slog, given that it was mostly just a first-person narration of different English town names as our story lead documents his encountering of and flight from the Martians. The last third of the book, where our story lead is hiding from and observing the Martians from a wrecked house, is, fortunately, the best part, so it ends strong. I would recommend this novel given it is a classic, but there are better Wells' novels out there
