This book is one of the worst I've ever read, that's written by an author who clearly thinks it's one of the best. What we have here is a book that shamelessly steals from other famous fantasy works (not homage, just blatant theft), by gushing as much as possible about Ayn Rand, and thinking that well-written female characters means "strong women" and nothing else. A magic system for women because men are too angry and become consumed by it, a magic system for men because women aren't controlled enough, Mary-Sues and Gary-Stues abound, with the main character having all the super rare magic in the world and his love interest being the most powerful user of her own magic system, but of course they can't be together because she can't have sex. Which brings me to the sex.
Terry Goodkind treats the sexual abuse in this book in a really dangerous way. He has the main character be physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by someone, and of course she loves him, and of course he end up loving her back. This is such a childishly immature, transparent way of using sex to bring a fetishized level to abuse in all forms.
Nothing about this book is good. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

It was slow and long to get into but once I did it was a very good story
The best word I have found to describe this book is contrived. There is a lot of laying of hands on forearms and shoulders. Hard looks abound and is the Sword of Truth REALLY the only sword that rings when you pull it from its sheath? Pretty sure not given how many times I've read that description in other books. This story is rife with confused heros who respect eachother's secrets but demand to know the truth from each other and who seem to know everything just by considering it a few seconds, heros who know what must be done but find it hard to come to terms with their own responsibility in the matter, and an old wizard who can't seem to call the main characaters anything but "my boy" and "my dear". The plot is unimaginative and the telling of it is nothing short of painful.
Great series... if you read the first handful of books and stop. Great story, fun characters.
Eventually the series seemed to run out of steam and you feel like you're just paying into the author's pocket because book. I'll pick up the later books if I see them on the under $5 table.

I read this after watching the TV series. Although I liked it, I think there are better fantasy series out there. I have books 2 and 3 but don't plan on reading them.
This book...This book is positively amazing! It is awesome and brilliant and I loved every single thing about it! Fantastic time spent devouring this tale, and I am ecstatic that there is much more to look forward to in this series!

DNF - I don't know why this one just ended up feeling like a chore and I was avoiding my kindle to avoid reading it. So I made the call to just call it.
Honestly, this book is just too damn long.
Interesting premise, good fantasy world, reasonably interesting writing style, but I eventually gave up a few hundred pages from the end because my library checkout expired and I just couldn't keep motivated to push through. About halfway through it just really started to drag, and the characters were a little too stiff and uninteresting to really keep me engaged. Also, the Darken Rahl feels like every single possible fantasy villain ever, with perhaps a little more nasty gore in the description of his torture of innocents.
Perhaps if I had read this as a teen when I was less jaded I would have loved it. Right now, it just couldn't keep me going.
