I remember being obsessed with the tv series in 7th grade (more than a decade ago, omg) and binge-watching it on my Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 at the middle of the night while I had school the next day and being afraid my parents will catch me not sleeping.

I heard about the questionable things the author did, but since he is not among us anymore, I wanted to finally see where the story would have gone if they didn't cancel the show after 2 seasons, so I joined the #SwordofTruthReadalong2022.

Sadly I didn't care about the plot and it is too slow moving for me, so I'm not sure I'll continue, but I appreciated that it was more character driven than most high fantasies. Also, it is still so hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this romance was written by a man. Like you can say anything you want about him, but based on this book, he respected women and consent.
And I loved how Richard called Kahlan smart and parised her skills and brain for a long time and actually become friends with her before he started to be interested in her romantically and sexually.

absolutely great!

Fantastic! Can't wait to order the next one!

This was more of a 2.5* book for me. I picked this up as I was on holiday and wanted a fairly long read and I had heard so many people who truly loved this series raving about it and recommending it to me. I was intrigued in just HOW it got such a good status and I was hoping that I would pick it up, read it, and fall in love with it.

Unfortunately for me that was not quite what happened. I would say that because I have read a LOT of other fantasy and High fantasy books and thus have a lot to compare this story to, I just found that there was noting truly unique about the story. I love reading about a world which has something a bit quirky and different to many of the other fantasy worlds I have read, and whilst i don't mind borrowed ideas too much, I would have preferred a lot more originality.

I did like the characters and I felt like the story was good, there was nothing I truly disliked and the writing style was decent, if not truly unique. I felt like the main character, Richard, was easy to imagine and the descriptions (although often a little long) helped me to imagine the world more clearly and the characters. I did like the idea of Mother Confessor and the Barriers between the worlds even though neither one is that original, and I liked the world itself but I would have to say that there is better fantasy writing out there too.

I found elements of the storyline were twisted and surprising, whilst other areas were fairly dull and easy to guess ahead of time. On the whole I would say that this is a good story if you want to start off the fantasy genre because it's pretty simple writing and there's noting too deep and scary about the storyline or characters. Personally, this wasn't unique enough for me to rate it very high, but I can see why many people (who may not have read other fantasies I have or who read this as their first fantasy) love this author and series. I am not sure I will continue with the series, but we shall see in the future...

Third times a charm

I read this book twice as a kid and never quite got it. Now rereading it - I understand what drew me in. Goodkind builds a believable, fantastic story with a strong main and supporting group of characters. It’s a great setup for all the other books in this series.

This was a re-read for me.  After not revisiting this book in several years, I found myself engaged in the plot, rooting for the main characters, and choked up at the emotional bits.

It has been rare lately for me to plan my entire day just to skip all I had wanted to accomplish in order to read a book. This book stole an entire Saturday from me. It is a solid fantasy/quest and an outstanding representative of that genre. I can understand why it is so popular. The characters pulled me right in and I became very invested in what was happening to them. An evil ruler bent on destroying everything, a forbidden romance, a wizard in disguise, an unlikely hero, what wouldn't there be to like?

not original, no flavor, nothing

Terrible writing but excellent story.
