the romance in this book consists of the forbidden, brother’s best friend, first love, second chance romance, and miscommunication tropes. in addition, it’s also a slow burn romance filled with angst and the chemistry build up was pretty good. however, i found the slow burn too slow for my own preference.
i enjoyed the story— especially the first half. but, after the second half, i found myself losing interest. i wasn’t much interested in colm— liv’s brother— in the story; and i hated how he played such a huge role in their relationship— causing them miscommunication. i wasn’t a huge fan of ford in the end as well, i liked him more in the first half. he did have a huge character development, but wasn’t as huge as liv’s character development; it really threw me off.
so far, this isn’t my fav book in the series, but i’ll still continue to read the next book; for i’m almost done with the series.

fearless king is the fourth book in the kings of rittenhouse series.
it's the first book i took a quote from, so that should tell you something. but also, it was only a 3.5 stars.
we have met both of the main characters before. liv is colm's younger sister, and ford is one of the original five. there is a six-year difference between them, and this is a brother's best friend novel.
on paper, fearless king had all the ingredients to make this brother's best friend work: characters who have history/known each other, brother!!!, age gap, girl who was interested in guy for years, drama, sneaking around, forbidden romance, smut, sports romance. for me the execution just lacked.
firstly: the characters. both ford and liv felt really 2d to me. either they were just built off of each other, or sometimes off other supporting characters. for example, liv would sometimes feel like an extension of colm, especially in the earlier books. yes, that was slightly addressed in her pov (am i tagging along with colm's friends?) but hughes didn't really write or do anything to establish liv away from her brother and his friends even though it was mentioned briefly.
i do like romance, but when the two characters cannot be away from each other, are obsessed with each other to the border of obsessive (especially when they aren't together,) i find it hard to connect to them and see any character growth. case in point: at the beginning of the book, it shows liv and ford kissing and then just completely gone for a year and a bit. but it's like they just never were apart and were constantly thinking of each other and?? also there's this one scene in the redemption arc where liv's like please ford i need to figure out who i am and who i want to be and ford is like yea yea ok and then two seconds later he's back and he's like i can't do it
i was like >>??????? bro the girl asked for some space and you can't even give it to her?? i really didn't like the plot point at all it ruined the whole ending for me.
the whole ending was unsatisfactory because of the whole colm thing. you have to wait to read heartless king to get the issue resolved and i read the first two pages of it and it literally starts with colm drinking away liv's trust fund I'm like ??? what?
if you've read the book "the chase" by elle kennedy, fitzy and summer is a lot like ford and olive. especially with how people feel about them, i can relate with them.
the chemistry just seemed so forced. at times, it did flow decently but other times it felt stilted and awkward. like it was super "this is the only person for you" when it didn't have to be. idk i didn't love that,,,,
the only thing i really liked was the phone smut. bro who knew talking dirty over the phone was so alluring?!? brb looking for more recs of that! but even the development to get there was questionable.
overall i got a quote from it but literally nothing else so....yea...

This took me so long because I’ve been obsessed with Normal People (you should watch it), aaand I have to say that I might had had higher hopes for this book because I really loved Ford in the previous ones and this one turned out to be a lil flat, but I really liked it <3
Liv and Ford are my favorites so far! I love mutual pining and I thought their falling apart then falling back together again felt very realistic.
They did both frustrate me individually because they were both terrible at communicating, both with each other and with everyone else in their lives, particularly Colm and Grant. I also struggle with following the timelines in all of the Maya Hughes books that I've read so far. However, I still did overall have a fun time with the book!
