adventurous dark medium-paced

It's a long time since I read Lord of the Flies, and for a while I didn't realise this is actually a retelling - I thought it was an homage, but as we got near the end I realised that there are parallel characters, plot points, ideas and scenes.

Sadly, I almost didn't realise, because I almost didn't keep reading. The 'influencers' were all such horrible people, I very nearly couldn't keep going. Rafi has her bad points, but overall she's at least better than they are.

Plus, I kept getting distracted by practicalities. The only food on the island is a few sandwiches no one eats, some fish that only River and Rafi eat, and some fruit that no one can buy because they've already given all their stuff to Peggy. We're outright told there's no water. And yet no one is hungry, thirsty, no one falls ill apart from in plot relevant ways, no one even gets a headache!

The mystery is pretty good, I didn't see it coming, and overall the story itself was fine. I just didn't like most of the characters. But that's ok, right?

I think this book premise overall wasn't for me. Sounded intruiging but I just didn't get invested enough. Maybe if I had read this some years ago when I was very heavily interested and intruiged by influencers and famous people, I'd might have enjoyed it more.

I honestly don't know why this book has such mediocre ratings?

Every single time I pick up a Goldy Moldavsky book I have the best time reading it.

This was a bit of a weird one for me. I liked the premise but I don’t think it went far enough or dark enough. Considering the source material, this felt very surface level. It was sort of heavy handed and I don’t think it was as effective as it could have been.

Received an ARC from Netgalley. It was quite funny/satirical...will write more after it is published.

Overall 2.5 stars:

I listened to the audiobook of Lord of the Fly Fest for a November book club with some of my closest bookish friends. I didn't have high hopes going into as someone had already DNFed it before page 100. I had no idea what this book was about going into it so I was ready for anything, good or bad.

I didn't like this book partially for the fact that the plot line was severely lacking. I felt like there was absolutely no story line besides the fact that a bunch of people, specifically whiney and annoying influencers, were stuck on an island for a music festival that didn't end up happening. The main character, Rafi, went on this trip to try and get an interview with River Stone, who is an extremely famous musician. Rafi full on believes that River killed is girlfriend and she wants to solve the case and she is documenting everything on her podcast. I can see this story line going somewhere, but it was poorly executed and there were so many different subplots going on that pulled away from the main plot of the story. I listened to this in less than 24 hours and I'm writing this review the same day I finished it and I hardly remember what happened in most of the book. I was not impressed.

This book felt like a 30 minute episode of a series rather then the whole series. I gave this a 2.5 stars because there were some small redeeming parts of the book. There were a few parts that made me chuckle and I also liked how the book acknowledge a character with they/them pronouns and used them through the entire books. That was about it. I probably wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
