The series is growing on me, but it took me most of the way through to really get into it more. I'll be going on to the second one in hopes I really get into it!

The beginning of the book was slow ramp up to a really fantastic mystery. For the first 75-100 pages I though this was yet another time I just didn’t see what everyone else was raving about, even though I’m a sucker for a Holmes like detective story… And then it clicked together and I did not want to put it down. The young main character was amazingly and believably awkward with her relationships while still being brilliant in her specialty. The flashbacks were a perfect way to explain a story that ‘everyone knows’ already in the book, happily they were perfectly placed and concise so we could get back to the story that had me captivated. I think there are enough clues that a mystery reader will be satisfied, but I certainly do not have a guess as to the culprit yet! The cliffhanger ending caused me to immediately hop online and buy the next installment of the series.

I enjoyed this YA mystery quite a bit. There is a significant amount of murder for a book written for kids, but I found the premise of the story fascinating. Who wouldn't want to attend such a school? Overall I think this trilogy would have been better written as one longer book instead of dragging it out over 3 books. Book one definitely did not feel complete.

many thoughts going on and none of them are coherent. love the dual chronology of the book and how it flashes to 1936 and i guess modern age respectively. took very long for the plot to start tho but when it did i didnt stop reading hee hee. also i love representation but it was like maureen googled a list of people who dont fit molds and now every ellingham student is like ‘bisexual, person in a wheelchair, poc, guy from california, lesbian, tiktok famous, deranged’ initially it felt like a dump of ‘look how woke i am!!!!’ and then maureen didnt focus on it too much (which my disabled ass loves) and i thought oh ok cool maybe this time its different but then vi was misgendered halfway through the book so now i once again dont love the representation lol. but eeeeee i wanna know what happened aaaaaa mystery makes my brain go brrrrr
