Why these are just so wonderful is hard to put a finger on. Anne is now a schoolteacher, no longer the source of mischief herself (mostly) but an observer of it. Her view of the world, however, and her deeper relationship with Murilla and others on the island are just fine writing.

When Gilbert is your favorite character....this book feels a bit slow. But then it is Anne and Marilla and lots of Green Gable moments and I can't help but wish I lived on PEI....and could spend my time writing love letters to a flowering tree. The twins appear in this book and Anne teaches at the local school so that she can stay to help Marilla (who's eye sight is failing- and has horrible headaches). It all works out because this is Anne and we shall continue to the next book....where I hope Gilbert will appear.

Read if you miss a red-headed mischievous girl.

It was a little weird re-reading this one, since some of the things I thought happened in it actually appear to happen in the third, but overall it was still a lot of fun. Anne remains such a delightful character even though there are some things about her that you can't help but notice are a marked change. I wasn't wild about Dora and Davy the first time, and I remain not wild about them now, especially since I can't help but feel that Davy gets to do all the interesting things simply because he's a boy.

“Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into ones life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one's side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination fung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music; perhaps.. perhaps.. love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath.”

Hey I’ve finally caught up to my 8-year-old self. Anne x Gilbert forever ♥️ The author really has a way with words. She’s able to turn the mundane into something so exquisite. Either this or Anne of Green Gables is the OG cottage core book.
