(Read with little sister as part of the "1,001 Children's Books To Read")

I thought the other engines were mean, so kudos to the little blue engine with the kind heart who helped.

gave me unrealistic expectations for life

This is a family favorite - one that we read to our girls more times than I can count!

One of my favorites from when I was a kid.

My kids have the board book version of this classic. While it does omit a few scenes, it is the best board book version I've seen. It was my boys' favorite for years.

She thought she could, so she did. An unintentional feminist classic.

Such a classic .In the tale, a bigger train filled with gift for children most be pulled over a high mountain. When the train gets stuck the little engine ask for help but many of the larger trains refuse to help. The story then shows all of the obstacles the little engine faces,But he keeps himself going by encouraging himself by saying "I think I can" I remember as a kid whenever I felt like I couldn't do something I would think of the little engine saying " I think I can, I think I can" Now as a mother this is the book I know I can read to my lil Ladybug to teach her the value of optimism and hard work.

A classic that I had forgotten about until I picked it up at the library with my kids. Great children's book.

The story of the Little Blue Engine is so timeless and had such an impact on my childhood that I couldn't not share it with the preschooler I tutor. He isn't as fascinated by trains as my brothers and I were as kids, but he loves cars and trucks and other "things that go," so it got the job done. After all, the Little Blue Engine is an easy character for kids to root for. Short and sweet (and perhaps a little too simplistic) with a lot of repeating lines for kids to easily memorize, this charming tale is about perseverance and believing in yourself, sure, but it also presents a nice message about kindness and helping others.
