Ce roman m'a terriblement déçu. Peut être avais je trop d'attente. De la part d'un auteur aussi réputé pour son talent inné pour les livres d'horreur, je m'attendais à un chef d'oeuvre à faire froid dans le dos. Mais je n'ai été ni impressionné, ni effrayé. Je n'ai même pas ressenti un soupçon d'angoisse. Au contraire, je me suis ennuyée
Les choses les plus horribles de ce roman ne sont pas du fait des vampires mais des humains eux même. Un homme qui viole et bat sa femme parce qu'elle a été infidèle. Une femme qui bat son BÉBÉ qui n'a même pas un an. un enfant de 5 ans tout au plus, qui finit en sacrifice pour un rituel satanique.
Ce sont là les seules choses qui m'ont secoué pendant cette lecture et il y a de quoi. Ce sont des choses qui existent, elles ne s'arrêtent pas à la fiction et ça les rend plus horrible.
Ma lecture a été terriblement longue et fatigante. J'ai cru que je ne terminerai jamais ce livre. Les textes était parfois longs et assommants, composés de descriptions et de récits dont on aurait pu se passer . Car oui l'auteur a tendance à s'égarer.
Je ne suis pas parvenue à l'accrocher aux personnages. À part le petit Mark petrie et le vieux Matt qui ont été de mon avis les seuls êtres dotés d'intelligence dans ce livre, personne ne m'a particulièrement marqué.
En bref, ce livre a été une déception. C'était ok mais sans plus.

Very good, tense read. Love Stephen’s ensemble work, he is a fantastic writer of side characters, maybe one of the best out there. Definitely genuinely quite freaky in parts. Loved the good vs evil tropes.

I found the beginning of 'Salem's Lot a little difficult to get into without a central pov like you typically get in a King book (or a handful main distinct ones like in The Dark Tower or The Stand), finding it harder to focus with the interesting alternative of following a town, even if there's some key players in that town. But once you get to roughly the half way point, this unique structure really helps pick up the sudden acceleration in pace, as you get to see a range of snapshots across the town as the chaotic domino spiral of the plot begins to kick in, making the terror and stakes feel all-consuming, whilst really building the momentum of the action nicely. Having a swarm of vampires, clearly also drawing from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, is a slightly more uncommon trope of vampire stories but works really well here to continue to build that inevitable kind of overwhelming dread.
However this is kept from being the top level of King for me because (as well as the previous issues with perspective) of the ending really, which feels like it takes a lot of the momentum and intensity out of the story to tell a more contemplative ending than the story had really called for until then. I understand it's trying to sell the whole 'small town'-ness of it but it just doesn't feel as epic or cathartic as the rest of the final part!
Anyway, I hear the short One For The Road (from Night Shift) is a good epilogue/sequel to the story, so I may have to check that out at some point

The first half was good, as the suspense was building and the mystery was not yet revealed. But once we find out that we’re dealing with vampires, the constant vampire tropes made everything feel a bit hokey.
