Ah Kiyo you silly bugger. I always say: never let teenagers make life-altering decisions.

One little grumble:

Mishima follows Tolstoy in that he directly inserts discussions of the overarching themes of his work directly into the novel; this took me out of the story somewhat and I really didn’t enjoy the handful of sit-down chats about reincarnation that the characters had.

These aren’t as egregious as Tolstoy’s “and now I will mention the progress of the perception of history in the west for 18 chapters”, and they are all couched within the context of the story, for example the final discussion was “the monk talked at length to Honda about Buddhism. She went on and on and Honda was bored out of his skull”.

But still, I hate having to reread stuff multiple times to make sure I understood it. Flashbacks to the interminable dreck that was Pride and Prejudice.

Final thoughts? Glad nobody killed themselves, seeing as so much of Mishima was in Kiyoaki.

Killed themselves YET, I mean. 3 books to go!
