The vibes? immaculate. I’ve never wanted to jump in the ocean more while eating liquorice and tea. The dialogue? mildly cringy. Getting with her dead sister’s ex? Icky.
I first fell in love with Holly Ringland on the Back To Nature TV series, it nourished us in our seemingly never ending lockdown quandary. I hadn’t read her work yet, Alice was on the to-read list, till I wandered in a shop on Wurundjeri WoiWurung country recently and there Ester was sparkling at me, I read the back cover and gasped - a book about Selkie mythology and a sisters grief, did you write this for me Holly? Did you know my big sister died and her unfinished Selkie painting is now sitting on her easel in my art room asking for me to finish her?
I couldn’t put this book down. It fed me in all the ways you want a good novel to. Thank you Holly, please keep writing, I’m looking forward to reading more.

This book was truly magical. I wept all the way through. I will never look at kelp, sea shells, swans or moths in the same way. I was beside the protagonist throughout the whole journey- and what a journey it was! Unforgettable- I recommend this to everyone!! Lutruwita, my heart shaped Island ♥️
Esther is feeling lost after her sister disappeared into the ocean a year ago, and she sets off on a journey to find out what happened to her, in the hope of putting her life back together. By the end, I quite enjoyed it, particularly once the action moved overseas, but on the whole the style was a little overwrought for my taste. It’s pretty intense with angst, has a good sense of place, and flowery language. Also, as an emetophobe, I struggled with more throwing up than one usually comes across in a book. Lots of hangovers, but also responding to strong emotions with throwing up. I definitely couldn’t watch the movie.
