For the most part I found the characters a little jarring and annoying however I did like the concept of the story, Esther finding herself through retracing the steps of her sister Aura who had died. The bond and strength between the women throughout the story, their resilience, traditions and support of each other were things that appealed to me. A story with a background of folk lore and superstition. I was unaware of the Faroe Islands so as a result of reading this book, learned a bit more geography

This book was profoundly moving. It covered a range of topics surrounding grief and death of a loved one in such a sensitive and unique way. And the characters… I feel like I know them. I feel like if I were to visit Tasmania, I’d run into the Wilding family. And I could visit Copenhagen and see Abelone. And if I went by the Toshavn, I could stop by Sophus’ pub. It was all very grounded and visceral. I miss them all already.

This story took a lot of unexpected turns that I was initially wary of. But these imperfect characters navigated them to the best of their abilities, and it was realistically handled. Esther and her family in particular are such imperfect characters, but I grew to understand and love them deeply. I will definitely be checking out other books from this author.

I nearly didn’t finish this book. Multiple times. I’m extremely glad I did.  It could absolutely be shorter with a lot of edits - I was at the point of being unable to listen to Esther question what she was doing or have another panic attack or hangover or forget to eat one more time. BUT, she was not rushed through her grief and trauma, which is never going to be easy to read about.
I’m still not sure how I feel about parts of the conclusion, but the writing style was incredibly immersive and the descriptions truly beautiful. The folklore the story built on was clearly well-researched and respected.   This book will stay with me for a long time.
