“When the Met looks different, it's often the beholder who's changed.”
related to this as someone who works in a wonderful museum (albeit in retail, not in the galleries) and also as someone who’s been visiting the Met since I was being pushed around in a stroller :)

I will be contemplating these words for a long time. It is a beautiful marriage between my 2 great loves; the written word and art. If you enjoy either, please read this. I plan to carry this book with me on my next trip to the Met, so I can read these brilliant descriptions while viewing their subjects in person. I have a feeling that it will be my favorite trip of all!

This is, without exaggeration, one of the best books I’ve ever read. Superb. A tale of grief and growth, pause and progress, rediscovering oneself and having the world brought to your everyday while surrounded by some of the greatest achievements in human history. I’m not an art lover, but this memoir makes me want to love art, humanity, and myself more. Wow.

he is soooo pretentious and i love that about him. this book had great anecdotes and his prose is very strong, but the storytelling needs a little more TLC. It felt as though he couldn't decide whether it was nonfiction or memoir and so it fell a little flat overall.

I wanted to like this book and I feel badly that I did not. It came across to me as if the author was somehow disconnected from his writing. Or perhaps it was me who was disconnected from the writing. I could not find a foothold to keep me interested. Sadly, it went on like that for me for the entirety of the book
