I was in the mood for a fantasy and a friend recommended this one to me - boy did it do the trick! I really don’t read many, but my standards are unreasonably high in the genre and I find I’m nitpicky about what I’m up for and what I’m not. This one really delivered - imperfect but badass female MC, interesting but not overly complex world-building, excellent romantic tension, and lots to uncover along the way. I am not wholly unfamiliar with the Norse gods, which lend their stories to this magical world, but I got to know them much better and loved how their magic was interwoven into the lives of the main characters. Overall, I thought this was great and only dinged it .5 stars for some quibbles I had with how obstinate the MC was at times (I get why but it still bugged me).

4.5. I really liked this! Aspects of it felt predictable, but that doesn’t always bother me. I loved the twist at the end and I look forward to the rest of the series. Freya has a lot of parts to her that are fun to explore as a reader and I can’t wait to see that expand more throughout.

Dreaming to be free of her vain and unkind husband and take control of her fate, Freya’s life is turned upside down as she finds herself suddenly wife to a jarl, a gods mark inked in blood on her skin. Yet this new position gives her no more freedom, as her power hungry husband seeks only the destiny that has been foretold to the one who controls hers. As trials force her to stand on her own, she is surprised to find her only ally is his son, Bjorn. They find themselves bound in more ways than one but can she trust Bjorn to set her free?

Ugh I had a lot of hope for this one. Such an interesting premise. I loved the idea of the children of the gods and their roles amongst morals, of fate that is either decided or not, of shifting loyalties amongst a war driven culture of people. I was hoping for a shieldmaiden and got a damsel in distress. *rolls eyes* while driving plot is presented as Freya taking control of her fate, in my opinion, she kept doing the exact opposite. Maybe I should have more empathy. The twist at the end did not have me counting down the days to the sequel.
