Epic.

I don’t know anything about the craft of writing a novel but I believe a class on “world building” could be taught using this book. As a reader, I appreciate the work that Mario Puzo put into creating this world in The Godfather that really has an identity and “feeling” of its own.

IMO, the book is as good as the movie and both are 5 stars all the way.

My reaction? AWESOME! Seriously, this book was truly fabulous. It was a lot seedier than the movie and it made me more aware of the fact that Puzo was capitalizing on an incredibly violent culture that caused a lot of pain and damage. But. It was fabulous. There were a couple of things about the writing that I disliked. One is that he would tell a time period from one person's point of view and then go back to the beginning and tell it from another POV and so on. The other thing that I disliked was that he would show you the result of something that happened and then go back in time and show the event. This example encompasses both: Michael reads about Vito's shooting in the newspaper and THEN you actually get the scene of Vito being shot. This really takes the teeth out of the event itself! Then it shows what Sonny was doing when Vito was shot, then Tom, then... actually, I don't even remember, but you see this situation from the POV of six or seven people. This was both jarring and irritating. Overall the book was completely fascinating though. I'm not sure how much my knowledge of the movie influenced my love of the book, I just know that I was completely hooked. As I told a friend, though, it didn't use the phrase "sleeps with the fishes". This made me sad.

The parts of the book that are in the first movie are almost dead on for what happened in the movie. There are a few times I lose track of what's going on in the movie, or why what's happening is happening, so I enjoyed seeing the motives behind everything.

Ten tytuł zna chyba każdy więc nie będę się tutaj jakoś specjalnie rozpisywać nad fabułą. Przed laty miałam okazję podziwiać filmową adaptację dziejów rodziny Corleone po której ten tytuł znalazł się obowiązkowo na mojej liście "must read" i doczekał się przeczytania DOPIERO po.....30 latach. Ech, doprawdy niezbadane są wyroki mola książkowego
