The problem here is that I have thought for many years that the film adaptation of this novel was one of the perfect movies. Citizen Kane, Lord of the Rings, movies like that where simply everything works together and creates a flawless picture. Unlike Lord of the Rings, almost none of this book gets cut for the film. It is nearly a shot-for-shot of the book. So however perfect or imperfect one thinks the movie is, so too is the novel it is based on.
(Having read this book 10 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if my memory of it is incomplete or inaccurate.)
At age 14, I was a major tomboy, and like most boys my age, was obsessed with the mafia/other masculine images in our society. Yet, I was solidly in the nerd category, so of course I read this book before watching the movie. I had to do that. Duh. (At the time, I felt this vehemently.) This book appealed to me then, as it does now, because I have always had a sense of adventure and adrenaline has always propelled me through life. I get a kick out of scuffling and arguing and participating in pissing contests as much as the next guy--and I'm not going to lie about it. This book is macho. It's well written and captivating, which sometimes I associate more with female writers, but gosh do you have to be in the "masculine" mood to enjoy it. And, at the time, I was. Now, it comes and goes, but the book will always be a favourite.

The story draws inevitable comparisons between Vito and Michael. Vito inspires both love and fear, a balance that cements his power. Michael, on the other hand, elicits fear alone. Michael’s journey is where the real emotional gut-punch lies. We see Michael evolve from a naïve college student, dreaming of becoming a math professor and leading a normal American life. And yet, bit by bit, circumstance and tragedy chip away at that innocence, reshaping him into someone unrecognizable. By the end, Michael is ruthless, cold, and consumed by the very power he once rejected.
This is more than just an action-packed, two-generational mafia saga; it’s a story that feels cinematic, almost as though you’re watching a movie unfold rather than reading a book. The Godfather isn’t just a book you read; and by the time you turn the last page, you’ll understand why it’s considered one of the greatest novels of all time.
