The story draws inevitable comparisons between Vito and Michael. Vito inspires both love and fear, a balance that cements his power. Michael, on the other hand, elicits fear alone. Michael’s journey is where the real emotional gut-punch lies. We see Michael evolve from a naïve college student, dreaming of becoming a math professor and leading a normal American life. And yet, bit by bit, circumstance and tragedy chip away at that innocence, reshaping him into someone unrecognizable. By the end, Michael is ruthless, cold, and consumed by the very power he once rejected.
This is more than just an action-packed, two-generational mafia saga; it’s a story that feels cinematic, almost as though you’re watching a movie unfold rather than reading a book. The Godfather isn’t just a book you read; and by the time you turn the last page, you’ll understand why it’s considered one of the greatest novels of all time.

I really enjoyed this novel, more than I thought I would. I'm writing this review about a year after I've finished the book, and I find the part I can't stop thinking about is the last two pages. All that action, buildup, backstory, and in-depth narrative, and the most memorable part for me was the very end. Damn. ((A very good book-to-movie adaptation, though.))

Ok what this book was way better than I expected. I truly never would have read if it wasn’t recommended. I imagined some mob shootings and drugs and absolutely zero depth. Turned out to be way better.
I liked:
- The charisma. Like damn I want to be on the godfather’s good side. What a lesson in how to curate loyalty and power. That man has extreme emotional and interpersonal intelligence.
- Learning about such a foreign world. You imagine utter chaos but strangely it’s a very regimented world. It’s brutal yes but there are codes and lines and if you cross those you will def be punished.
- A v fun action packed read, you feel like you’re zooming around making sneaky deals with mobsters
- Setting was so cool. Gritty grimy old NYC where familial ties meant more than law
- It has way more emotional depth than I expected. The struggle of morality vs family ties really makes you understand the pressure
- Dude the horse head. Iconic
Didn’t love:
- The west storyline. Idk I just felt like I wasn’t as interested and it took me out of the gritty NYC world
- The whole female surgery part truly just skip. So strange so weird
- It covers a ton of time with multiple generations of the family so it can be long/hard to adjust to time passage
But ok if you’ve been avoiding this bc you think it’s the book equivalent of a 25 year old dude whose one hobby is mobster video games def give it a chance.

The man of extraordinary force and character: The Godfather.
This book certainly hits the top of the list.
I am stunned because of lack of words appreciative enough to describe what a sensational story this is.
I could read and reread this over and over again, yet not get enough of this brilliant masterpiece by Maria Puzo.
I bow down to you, Maria Puzo. I bow down to The Godfather.
