The book is exactly like the movie. Dialogue is the same, scene order is the same, bullet hike positions are the same. Coppola just literally made each page into direct script and shot it.

A friend had recommended that I read The Godfather because apparently it is just freaking amazing - a real classic. I must say that I don't really agree. It was a nice read, very fast paced with lots of action balanced with thorough description, but it just didn't spark for me. It was incredibly racist and I found the portrayal of the female characters to be extremely irritating. Women are not that petty, nor are we to be treated as unimportant and unable to know about the lives of our husbands. It just didn't sit well with my ideas regarding egalitarianism between the sexes, etc. However, the character of the Godfather was very delightful and I genuinely enjoyed Michel, at least up until he apparently gets "thunderstruck." That sounded just a little too rape-y for my taste. For those who have not read it, being "thunderstruck" is essentially seeing a woman who you desire greatly, but in the sense of possession more than any kind of love. The whole thing just sounded a bit weird and creepy. Be that as it may, I'd give this book three out of five stars because it was still a pretty good read, especially to my novel-starved mind. :)

Many chapters seemed unnecessary and boring. The main story is interesting and that is what is portrayed in the movie

I read the book during a recent visit to New York City and watched the movie on the plane ride home, which made for an immersive experience. The movie stayed very true to the book, though some big sections were left out. I loved reading the backstory of how young Vito Corleone eventually became the Don. Yes, some of it is dated, and yes, there were a few choppy parts that felt in need of editing, but I was pleasantly surprised by how really good this book was. If you loved the movie, you’ll enjoy the book.
