I cannot believe how immediately drawn into this book I was. I expected to hate it from page one, especially with some of the scenes I knew of from the movie. I found myself anxious to find out what would happen next. I became invested in the Corleone family. I was intrigued in-spite of their criminal background. I didn’t love it, though. I do not agree that it is an amazing book. There are maybe ten chapters give or take that I would actually consider amazing. Exceptional writing that holds your attention and makes you want more. Unfortunately, the storyline gets horribly bogged down by a series of drawn out background information and uninteresting characters (I’m looking at you, Johnny Fontane). The vulgarity and violence contained in this book alone makes me dislike it immensely. A long and tedious novel, but maybe worth it to those who love these kinds of stories.

Incredible storytelling and gives more depth to the characters than the movie. This strength is also the book’s weakness.

There are questionable detours with background characters that were fortunately cut from the movie. Whether that was Puzo’s or Coppola’s decision, it helped adapt the story into the superior version.

This shouldn’t stop any fan of the movie from passing up the book though. There are many details here that helped elevate the performances and direction in the film. Some subplots just left a sour taste.

Really did not age well but story itself is still absolutely amazing.

I understand this book is considered a classic for showing another side of the United States during the 60s. As an Italian-American, I feel as if I should like this book, but I /strongly/ disliked it. I can say this because I have family who fought their way up once they got to the US; this book should have done a better job of highlighting those aspects instead of the boring, boring way it was written.

A book that is written by men, for men, with nothing else in mind. I understand this takes place at a time when women were regarded as much less than men, but the author here uses the most bland language to get across something that's already tough to read.

A classic at what cost? Nah. 2 stars.

Even if you've seen the movie it still holds up. Immediately began a google worm hole on the Mafia. Morbidly fascinating.
