Keeping the rather raunchy content and overall distasteful message of the book in mind, I am almost ashamed to admit how much I enjoyed this book. Several portions of this novel were far too graphic for my taste, but other than that, The Godfather seized my attention and refused to relinquish it. As always, any book that gives me a different perspective on life always fascinates me, and The Godfather didn't disappoint.
Before I read this novel, I really didn't know much about the Mafia and the famed gangs of the twenties, and I most certainly couldn't understand what drove people to live this way. I mean, wouldn't you be apprehensive about stepping outside your home for fear of being ''blown away"? But Marco Puzo portrays what we might see as a dangerous and violent lifestyle in such a manner that by the end of the novel, you almost find yourself questioning the idea of an organized, democratic government. After witnessing the struggles of these Sicilian Families and their absolute devotion to honor, you may even find yourself rooting their time-honored tradition of the Mafia.

Having only seen the movies once or twice, it was awesome to get the back story and characters totally mapped out. That being said, I think this is a rare occasion of the movie being better than the book.

The Godfather is probably one of the most interesting books I have ever read. I loved its descriptive nature, masterful storytelling and each character's history. I feel like I know them all, and, worst of all, understand them all - their reasoning for doing terrible things, their beliefs and their choices.
For me, the most interesting parts were the Don's biography and Michael's "coming of age" of sorts.
But what surprised me the most was that The Godfather is not about shooting guns, killing people and executing acts of revenge. These are not nearly the most important things. This is just background. What is it about is family, pride and loyaly, which really strikes home.
It is a very intense story, and I wish it did not end so soon, even though the conclusion was logical, in a coming-a-full-circle sort of way.

Read the Danish version mafia as a teenager and was totally blown away, not sure it would be as amazing today, after having seen the movie
