Mario Puzo wanted to write a best-seller and by God he did. I don't think this is a testament to the power of literature as much as it's a testament to the wonder of storytelling and how entertainment is a worthwhile pursuit. Building up the willpower to watch the day's worth of films again, because the book absolutely comes to life in your head as you go through.
dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced

i just read this--the first two movies are classics, among my favorites, and for some reason i had always thought this book was more like classic literature . . . it was a good read but not exactly what i expected! more like a pulp novel. but i did enjoy it immensely. the movies stayed quite true to the book, except while reading i was surprised to find "leave the guns, take the cannolis" absent!

What can I say that hasn’t been said many times before? It’s a classic. As a feminist, I was tempted to give it a lower rating because the depictions of women in this book are absolutely appalling, particularly one character whose role in the film adaptation was thankfully reduced to a short cameo. However, I decided to keep it at a five because I would probably get in trouble with the Mob if I gave it anything less.

Honestly it's such a prestigious movie i was kind of surprised at how obviously this book is meant for being sold and not for artistic purposes (which the author was open about). Basically no themes, no metaphors, no point, just sex, violence and men talking. It's decent but like damn. A surprise.

Disclaimer: the rating is entirely based on how much I personally enjoyed reading the book.

Gosh, this was a hard book for me to get through. I flip-flopped between loving it and tearing my hair out from how infuriating it felt.

This book really has everything. Abuse! Italians! Rape! Murder! Politics! Gaslight gatekeep girlboss except every prominent character is a guy!

I really don't know. I think I'm going to be stuck in a love-hate relationship with this forever

I read this book at a tender age when it was inappropriate for me to read this book. However, I was then able to grow up with it and watch it become a part of American culture. It isn't The Brother's K, but it's pretty good writing.
