I gave the genre a try but it's just not my gig. I thought I'd try the genre with this classic and I made it about a third of the way through when I lost interest. I rated it four stars though as it says something when a genre of books I don't care for still held my attention for a third of the book (and it's a fairly long story). The talent of the writer is appreciated even if it just a variety of story I'm not into.

thanks to my beautiful boyfriend for picking this one out for me and now i'm super pumped to watch the movie with him!!!! this book was such a fascinating family drama with a lot of pop culture surrounding it. i'm glad to be able to talk about this story now with some knowledge and experience. Michael, Vito, and Hagen were really compelling characters. i think the stories of Johnny Fontane and Lucy were a bit overdone, but i have heard that they are underplayed more in the movies, which makes sense for their roles in the stories. also cannot give this book five stars in good conscience considering the way women are written and talked about. overall, really glad to have read this book and talk to my boyfriend about it hehe <3 <3

Every character has a rich background expertly told that holds your attention. There is never a dull moment in this book and Puza expertly crafts scenes with tensions and violence. certified hood classic fr

A book of it’s time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Johnny Fontane story. But I’m glad it was left out of the film.
It was intriguing to see what Coppola decided to keep in, essentially everything related to the Corleone’s directly. The ending was a surprise as well, interesting he didn’t include Kay running away and Hagen’s confrontation.
A trainee at work said aptly “It’s so written by a man.” With this I can agree, it is overtly sexual and specific in its world view, however whether I believe this is the author’s views or the views of the world he has created is another thing.

Reading The Godfather felt like hanging with the boys (something I very much enjoy in contained amounts). I laughed, I cried, I was completely puzzled by Puzo’s personal stance on women. This latter point I can forgive on account of the 1) it being about the mafia, 2) it being published in 1969, and 3) because I had fun both because of and despite it.

Once you get past the anagrammatical style and the non linear timeline it’s a real joy ride.

At the end of the day… it’s really just another story about the power of true friendship

I'm glad I read this book, as I suppose it's considered a classic. Whilst it was a relatively easy read, and I wanted to know what happens, it just felt slow and a little mish-mashed together. The writing was clunky in places, and there was little to no character development. The best I can describe it as is very 2D character-wise. Usually there is an inner monologue of the reasons behind a character's actions, but there wasn't much or any of this and sometimes I felt very lost as to why something was happening. Glad I read it, though, but hope the movie is better!!
